Some quarterbacks are great on the field, but are perhaps lacking a bit in the other aspects of the game. Those things that are for the good of the team. And from the sounds of it, Geno Smith is one of those types of guys. That’s how DK Metcalf described his now former quarterback in a recent interview on the Get Got Podcast with Michael Robinson and Marshawn Lynch.
“Me and Geno got to Seattle the same year,” said DK. “I used to bounce ideas off of Geno. Geno used to help me my first couple years with DB’s. He was like ‘Oh, you got so-and-so this week. I remember him when he was there, all he does is XYZ’. Me and Geno used to talk to each other about opposing DB’s when he was a backup.”
Smith wasn’t the starter. Didn’t need to be going to the team’s starting receivers to help them gameplan for opposing DB’s. But he did it anyway. His advice no doubt helped Metcalf to be named a Pro Bowlers and second team All Pro in his second season.
It was the next season that Smith took over as the teams starting quarterback and that work with Metcalf came right back to him.
“He becomes a starter and we still had that same conversation,” Metcalf continued. “The same chemistry where we could talk about stuff and I knew he was going to find me. I knew he had told Lock (Tyler Lockett), he was going to find Lock. So, it was great having Geno as a quarterback . . . Just having him as my extra set of ears and eyes in the offensive meeting and even when things got shaky, Geno would sometimes come up to me and say ‘Bruh, that was my bad, man. I got you, I got you. I need you to stay with it’.”
This led to a funny moment with Marshawn who showed shock at a QB “Taking accountability?!” as if it was not a quality he was used to seeing. It’s worth noting that Marshawn played his final two NFL seasons with the Raiders (2017-18) with Derek Carr as his QB.
A for Smith and Metcalf, they both went on to have Pro Bowl seasons together. Smith went to his first two Pro Bowls and Metcalf went to his second as well. Now both have moved on, with Smith joining the Raiders in a trade and Metcalf joining the Steelers in a trade. Seems a shame they couldn’t both end up in Las Vegas together to continue their chemistry.
