The biggest development of the Seattle Seahawks' offseason occurred when superstar wide receiver DK Metcalf requested a trade. It's been a crazy offseason for the Seahawks, who also traded starting quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, and replaced him by signing Sam Darnold in free agency. Still, Metcalf's request was arguably the biggest storyline of the summer.
General manager John Schneider appeased Metcalf by dealing him to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a second-round selection in the 2025 NFL draft (No. 52 overall) and late-round pick swaps. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer has now provided some insight on the fallout between the Seahawks and Metcalf that led to his trade request, and eventual departure.
Breer is reporting that Metcalf wanted a contract extension immediately. The Seahawks typically conduct such business later in the summer, around training camp and the preseason. The Steelers awarded Metcalf with a five-year, $150 million extension upon his arrival.
Breer also reports that Metcalf didn't possess a terrific relationship with Smith. Perhaps replacing him with Darnold at QB could have salvaged that aspect of things, but Metcalf was already unhappy with Seattle. Unfortunately, the above factors led to his trade demand. The Seahawks will move forward with Jaxon Smith-Njigba and offseason addition Cooper Kupp at receiver.

Breer reporting DK Metcalf asked for a trade in part because his timeline for getting an extension didn’t mesh with Seattle’s timeline for engaging in those discussions. And a geno rift? https://t.co/iWrbU3N8Kfpic.twitter.com/HFKLoLz07U
