Bills | No Franchise Tag for Williams - from www.KFFL.com
Sun, 6 Feb 2005 07:13:24 -0800

Mark Gaughan, of the Buffalo News, reports the Buffalo Bills are not expected to designate DT Pat Williams their franchise player this offseason. The price to franchise tag Williams, who is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March, is the average of the top five salary cap figures at his position ($5.1 million).

Pat Williams would look great anchoring the middle of our D-Line. He would really help our run defense IMO. I don't know how much $ it would take to get him here though.

Yes. And we overpay as much as necessary to get him. You put him in there and our defensive line is set...yes, even with Zellner and Pace holding down one spot between them, because that's all Zellner will have to do...hold on the run downs. Our LBs will be solid, our secondary will be our weakness and, with solid D-line play, the hole at FS and lack of depth at corner won't hurt as badly. Finally, we'll have a bit of depth on the D-line, with Davis providing good support and King, if healthy, backing up Dockett.

Yes, we still need more depth on the d-line, and a few secondary guys, but if we get Williams and no one else, we have a top-10 defense. Bank on it.

Sorry stout but while he is a very good DT he would not all by himself catapault this D into top 10 status. Few single players are capable of having that kind of impact much less at the DT position. Our run D would easily improve but I highly doubt we become a top 10 D with the same personnel and him.

I agree he's a worth extra $ and it won't cost picks to get him so he would be an excellent addition to our defense and we have cap room so if that is the one Marquee FA then so be it.

Yes, he would help tons. If you add him and get the Cardinal offensive to some reasonable state, the Defense becomes hugely better.

If the Cards could have run the ball better and score a little more often last year, the defense last year would have been top 15 last year.

Without both sides of the ball doing their job, it's hard to have a top 10 defense.

Shane that would give us three above average d-lineman. The only weakness being the Pace/Zellner side.

You're entitled to your opinion, even if it's grossly wrong :D

Seriously, though, what we lacked was simply the ability to stop the run. We didn't have the plugger DT to keep linemen off of our linebackers. Pat would give us that. Why WOULDN'T we be a top-10 defense then?

This defense would be top 10 if we where even average against the run.

But talk out of the Bills is that Eric Moulds is going to re-structure so that they can re-sign Pat.

I hope it goes down this way.

Free agents:
DT Williams
G Coleman or Diem (sp) or both
back up QB, maybe Johnson

Trade :
Get Henry, Bennett, or the Jets backup RB, cant remember his name. Will probably cost us a 2, hopefully a 3 for Henry or Bennett, but I think the jets guy is a FA.

If Shelton goes the we recoup our pick from above. Best case maybe we trade Shelton for Henry straight up. Is so, its a top priority to get at least 2 Offensive lineman.

Draft:
Johnson Lb. With Williams and Johson added to the front 7, they are quick and fast. Top 12 defense no problem.
2nd round or 3rd round depending on above scenario, CB
Rest of the draft add quality depth on the O line and secondary.

Wow, he isn't being Franchised, is Buffalo planning to use the tag at all?

I always thought he was a great DT, I say pay the man, he's perfect for what we need. I don't know who all will be available via FA, but I agree he could/should possibly be our #1 target.

Berry, P. Williams, Dockett, Zellner/Pace or maybe Spears(LSU) wouldn't suck at all IMHO. :D

All we would have to do is move up 2 spots. We were 12th last year.

On really good player upgrading the worst part of our D could easily do that. And with Dockett and Dansby improving from their rookie year, you can bank on it.

Why not? We made some huge strides last season on D. You bring him in and another starter in the secondary - yea we're top ten. 2 players then.

Yes!!!

HELL YES!!! Dockett and Berry would go off with Williams clogging the middle and our Linebackers finally could spend more time making tackles in the backfield instead of having to deal with extra OL slipping into their zone.

The Cardinals had the 12th ranked defense for the 2004 season; both in Total Defense (yards allowed/game) and Scoring Defense (points allowed/game).

The defense ranked 9th in Pass Defense (at 189.8 yards allowed/game)
The defense ranked 27th in Rush Defense (at 131.6 yards allowed/game)

The number one need for the Cardinals defense this offseason is to shore up the run defense. To do so the primary need is a line-plugging, run-stopping load of an anchor tackle.

Pat Williams fits the Bill (pun intended)...

Go get him!!! :cards:

How much improvement do you think we need ?

We were #12 this year, one guy could easily give us the bump we need.

Completely agree. This would make any offense we face become 1 dimensional because they wouldn't be able to run on us. Plus, look at what Rod Coleman did for Atlanta.

Just like the addition of Berry made our secondary better, I would think the addition of Williams would make our linebackers more effective. With a DT and hopefully, RB, addressed in FA, we can target Johnson with the #8 pick and go for OL help later on.
