It's a valid concern, I think, that the most tenured running back on our roster (Ellington) is no longer an RB. Kerwynn is the current number 2 - a guy I like, but someone who hasn't stuck to the team at times where we held 4 RBs.

Is there a spot for a Chris Johnson, DeAngelo Williams, Rashad Jennings?

I'm a little concerned we have no one with decent size or experience to spell DJ.

I think youth is the way to go with that one position in particular. Especially if they have some clue to life as to pass blocking.

yes we do. Along with a #2 CB and a #2 WR. We have 15M in salary cap space. There must be someone out there that can help us

Fortunately, picking up an RB is easy to do - I think they wait until the preseason to see how Penny plays out in pass protection before moving on a vet.

I am excited that Kerwynn Williams is the #2 RB. He deserves it. He runs hard and is sneaky good between the tackles. Gutsy, humble and hungry. Very excited too in having T.J. Logan as a 3rd down RB...considered by some to be the most talented 3rd down RB in the draft. If Elijaah Penny shows he can pound the rock with the big boys, this RB unit is complete.

UDFA James Summers has real potential as an all-purpose RB as well.

A veteran would be good for helping DJ get better and better too IMO. The other RBs in there cant teach him much.

No Jennings.

And I am a fan of Jennings but he is done, he lost his speed and explosiveness.

No.

RB is a position where you dont need vets. Youngins and rooks can do just fine. Really the only thing they need to learn is pass protection.

We don't know enough about what's happening on fields 1, 2 etc.

We've got KW, AE and Logan fighting for 2 scatback type spots plus Penny the leading contender for Big Back. It's likely that none of us has seen Summer in live action.

Reliability in pass pro and the receiving game along with ST play will probably determine who joins D Johnson in the RB room.

But - at least right now - it's what BA and Stump see on the practice field that should drive roster decisions (including whether we want to look outside).

Kerwynn is a solid runner when he's been given the opportunity, but his lack of pass protection, receiving skills & poor special teams play have always held him back. Then again, asking him to block a 6'7 280lb TE on punt protection was setting him up for failure.

Ellington is bad at pass protection & special teams too... at least he's a receiving threat.

Penny is an unknown as a RB against NFL defenses, but he should be the best choice for pass pro when DJ needs a breather. I'm just basing this off of his size, but pass pro is about desire & not being afraid of contact with bigger guys. If Penny wants to make the team then he needs to excel at pass pro & contribute on ST.

If none of the backup RBs can pass protect then we need a veteran. This is the main reason Stephan Taylor stuck around so long even though he sucked as a RB.

Agree.

We don't need another RB but if there's someone out there who can help us more than Andre, KW or Penney, we should upgrade the RB room. CJ has shown in the recent past that he can bring it. If the coaches feel he still can execute at that level, I think re-signing him would be a smart move.

The problem with bringing in an older vet usually they contribute nothing to special teams, and most backup RBs need to be able to play STs. I would go to Camp and if things don't shake out the way we hope then look to bring a Vet in, but I think the fall back plan is probably Ellington at this point, which I'm ok with.

I just like the idea of having a veteran mentor for DJ.

Does he really need a mentor at this point? I could see a veteran for the rb room in general, just for the been there done it factor, but I'm good going into camp with Williams Logan and Penny as the backups. I think Williams is a very good back and has shown enough to be given the chance to win the backup job.
