Does he really need a mentor at this point? I could see a veteran for the rb room in general, just for the been there done it factor, but I'm good going into camp with Williams Logan and Penny as the backups. I think Williams is a very good back and has shown enough to be given the chance to win the backup job.

Young guys can always use veteran leadership. Guys who has had long term success, playoff wins, super bowl experience, etc.

Im not completely disagreeing, but this team already has alot of veteran leadership to help mentor younger guys so just don't see it as a pressing need currently, like I said if things don't go as planned in camp then you bring someone in, but I want to use camp to see what we have with these younger guys, and I really do think KW has earned a shot at being RB 2.

I just feel we need a thumper RB with great pass blocking skills and I dont see that on our roster.

Personally I don't see that with any of the vet FAs listed, but you would think they all should be able to hold up in pass protection.

I think DJ fits the bill your wanting just because he is elusive doesn't mean he can't handle the thumper/pass pro game.
Penny is a big back that also fills what your wanting he is just young and unproven

I think you want a Vet for the sake of having a Vet which is fine I just don't see the immediate need.

one of those non starters needs to step up and show he can pick up a blitz....otherwise, yes we need another RB

And why I keep saying wait till camp. BASK see these guys everyday if they struggle with blitz pickups we will know because we will be kicking the tires on a Vet who can, but why waste a spot when we need to see what the young guys have first.

The only reason I posted this thread is that I never like to see a deficiency in leadership in a given room. You always want one guy who has been there before, if it's up to me. And that counts for the nuances of the game, like pass protection and such. Coaching is important and incredible, but a lot of position coaches haven't been out there on the field at this level, or have coached many different positions, or can't see what you're seeing when running the ball or whatever from a specific defender.

CB and RB are the only two spots where I see a sharp lack of veteran leadership on this team.

Pat Peterson is a Vet IMO and to be honest so is DJ .

I get it, but at some point the guys in the room figure it out the alpha always steps up.

Pat P says hi :)

I'm with those who want to see how training camp goes before bringing in a vet RB.

PP21 is still pretty damn young. He's got 5 years in the league, and mostly had veteran leadership around him, but the depth behind him is painfully inexperienced. If he goes out, we have two guys that have only been at the position at any level for a couple of years (Williams and Bethel). Behind them, Bouka, and I'm running out of names.

I still want a guy on the field, who has played against the WRs the team is seeing, and can tell them what's going on out there. The subtle tells, that kind of thing.

If PP or DJ go down Are we winning the superbowl even with an experienced replacement?

Well, DJ should be spelled at times, in my opinion. Just a couple of series to let him catch his breath. Sometimes there might be some short yardage scenarios, or pass blocking situations, where they aren't his optimal fit. Every guy past DJ - Penny excluded - is a "lightning" type, with little size or ability to work between the tackles. It's not about a full time replacement in my mind, just someone to spell him.

Patrick is the most important player on the team, in my mind, but everyone misses a game or a few snaps. I just want someone on the roster that's been there and done that.

Pat P. is going into his 7th season this year... he is veteran leadership at this point. I agree that we still need another veteran for CB #2 though.

I think P2 has enough experience to be that vet CB you want. I recall him telling the D that they didn't have off on Monday because even though the team won the D gave up too many points. That's leadership in spades and after 7 years I'm sure he knows enough to share with the DB's.

I'm not getting upset if we sign a vet CB but I'm fine if we don't.

My real concern here is having someone on the field though, just to clarify. If PP21 misses a game, we are starting some guys with a TON of inexperience. I'm just repeating my point, but in-game, you can't sub an athletic-but-inexperienced guy against a Julian Edelman, or Doug Baldwin. They may not be the best physical WR in the league, but they're seasoned enough to bait a young guy into the wrong decision.
