Do you also get feeling the Belichick doesn't value higher picks much more than lower ones

I see a consistent theme in Pats trades in that they often give up a high pick for a player and at same time recoup a lower pick in return. For instance, they will trade R1,2,3 pick for player x plus a R4,5,or 6 pick. I get the feeling that Belichick feels confident that he can find a good player in the draft whether it be in Rx or a couple rounds later.

It seems that no matter what or who they trade for, they always seem to get the other team to tack on a late round pick to make the deal. Just a pattern I have noticed for some time now with the Pats. He obviously values later round picks much more than many teams coaches and gms.

Tom Brady was a 6th round pick. Julian Edelman was a 7th round pick. Malcolm Butler was an underrated college free agent.

It all boils down to how well the scouts find NFL talent and how expertly the coaches develop their players.

I think Belichick understands the circumstances with college football and tries to avoid having too much roster depth filled with college players who are not ready.

You don't need High round pics when you're trading them for the caliber of players that he is...

I think it is a combination of a couple things. I think Belichick and the patriots are good at evaluating talent but probably not head and shoulders ahead of everyone else. That leads into the second thing. I think he knows that the draft is, to a certain extent, a crap shoot...and the more picks you have the better your odds are. or at least the better your options are. As someone mentioned above with extra lower round picks he can package them to move up and grab someone he really likes.

I don't think it is that he values one over the other. I think he is just really good at playing the odds.

also... he trades for players who have already proven they can play in the nfl...instead of drafting players he "thinks" can play in the nfl

I heard on tv that patriots won the Super Bowl while $60 million under the salary cap? I think any players have done well in the belicheck system, he'll get top price for few game starting qb so who flop elsewhere. Fundementally sound football beats our high risk high reward system every year. Just fact

:yeahthat:

Pats bust rate on picks is pretty much at league average. Whatever it is above average is due to their coaching and scheming abilities.

BLANKET STATEMENT:

The Patriots are not the example. They are not the bar. Do not use them as the measuring stick for anything.

They have Tom Brady. The greatest QB of all time. He makes all of their decisions null. Does your team have Tom Brady? If the answer is 'NO', then dont compare what your team does, to what the Patriots do.

They win regardless of who's QB...maybe not SB's, but still win games nonetheless. You really think the Cards would've won any games with Jacoby Brisset as QB? Heck no...

A game here and there is not a winning team. Stanton has won games and hes garbage. Moxie Max Hall beat the Superbowl Saints. Some thought he was the future.

This is in regards to 16 games, year after year.

You keep heaing NFL coaches complain that the college schemes are making the players more and more difficult to assess and less and less ready to play in the NFL. Then combine that with the CBA that limits practices and contact more than ever, it takes even longer to get rookies on the field or even figure out what you have in a young player. It seems like that would have some sort of a small lessening of value effect on late first round picks. Or maybe bring the entie pack just a little bit closer to center (compared to the past)?

I agree that Brady allows the Patriots to make moves that nobody else would. But Brady or no Brady, I think focusing on maximizing your odds of a hit by maximizing number of draft picks is the best way to go - especially in light of the above. Maybe the Patriots can afford to be more aggresive in the way they accomplish that.

The other idea that New England is applying is one of avoiding complacency. The Pats have enough confidence in their system that they are shipping out players who have won Super Bowls and bringing in guys who haven't. Chris Long is the perfect example. They sign a hungry player for a below market deal. He helps them win a Super Bowl, and then they let him go.
