Do you know what I hope happens to the Yankees?

I hope that some young upstart team like a Royals, Twins, or Angels meets up with the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs & kicks the $hit out of them like lets say in '02, or in '03(Marlins)

I'm hoping that the Dbacks meet the Yankees in the WS and beat them in another exhilarating WS Game 7.

As funny as it sounds even with the addition of Maddux to their staff (he isn't even close to the pitcher he used to be), I still don't like their chances.

Although their lineup is scary, their pitching staff is pretty weak IMO. I think they'll do well in the regular season but that pitching staff will hurt their chances for a WS IMO.

Pitching staff as pretty weak? I like most of your posts ash, but this is possibly one of the most insanely idiotic statements I have ever heard.

1. Mike Mussina
2. Javier Vasquez
3. Kevin Brown
4. Greg Maddux
5. Lieber/Contreras

Bullpen: Quantrill, Karsay, Heredia, Gordon, Rivera

This has the potential to be one of the most dominating pitching rotations in the history of baseball.

Mussina=Good
Vasquez= First time pitching in a pennant race, pressure.
Brown= Can't stay healthy.
Maddux= Has lost alot, losing his effectiveness
Lieber/Contreras= One coming off big injury, one is inconsistent.

You want to show me a better rotation in baseball, top to bottom?

It's difficult, and if the guys mentioned above stay healthy and play up to their potential then no, I can't think of one right now.

When has Brown shown he can be healthy?
How will Vasquez react to New York?
Maddux has been on the decline, will that continue with that short porch in right?
Lieber and Contreras are both untested. The bullpen is awesome, I'll give that. B

Boston's is pretty damn good

Pedro
Curt
Lowe
Wakefield

That's 1-4 that I think is better than the Yanks' possible starting rotation.

This has the potential to be one of the most dominating pitching rotations in the history of baseball.

Mussina - IMO vastly overrated (disappeared during the playoffs the past couple of years)

Vasquez - Good pitcher but has shown signs of inconsistency and who knows what the pressure of being in his first pennant race will do to him (not to mention the pressure for playing for the Yanks)

Brown - Great pitcher when healthy. A true ace but the problem is he has chronic back and elbow problems. Hard to rely on him with a past history like that.

Maddux - Sure HOFer but has been on the decline the past couple of years. Many regard him as a 6 inning pitcher. I just don't think he will do well in Yankee Stadium with the short porch in LF and RF (not to mention the fact that he was battling injuries all of last year as well)

Leiber - Good pitcher when healthy but just came off of a major injury

Could be damn good if everything went their way in terms of injuries but I just don't see it happening. They are really going to miss Pettite come playoff time IMO

Still like their bullpen though

Maddux in the rotation really puzzles me. I don't think he will handle the american league hitters well and this time will have to face a DH and perhaps a slightly different strike zone.

But hey - all he has to do is put in 5-6 innings and hand it over to the bullpen. Considering he's pitching against the other team's 4th pitcher - I say he'll get his 300th win ... but with a 4.00 ERA.

Did I miss something here? Is the Maddux deal a sure thing? Wasn't Cashman denying the report?

I would have to say the Cubs have the best starting 5 in baseball today;

Prior
Woods
Maddux
Zambrano
Clement

Houston is pretty good with the acquisition of Pettite and Clemens.

I have to disagree with you on Houston. I think both Pettite and Clemens were great beneficiaries of run support. Pettite's ERA was around 4, if I remember, and Clemens' ERA wasn't too small either.

I would go with the A's

Zito
Hudson
Mulder
Harden (who is unbelievable!!)
Redman

The addition of Mark Redman and a full year with Harden, they just keep getting better....I think they can beat the Yankees!

A 4.00 ERA in the AL is very good. Remember, they have the DH.

So the DH is good for a half a run--a full run in the AL? I don't know about that.

Batters hit well against Pettite, and Clemens is alright:

Pettite: .277
Clemens: .247

Besides, Minute Made Park isn't exactly a pitcher's park either...

The DH absolutely is worth a half a run. Look at the Yankees, Giambi is mostly used as a DH in the Yankees line-up.

As for the Astros staff, where they play does not matter. I'm just saying their starting five is one of the better ones in baseball.
