Do you like OLB? How's about some guy named Vilma?

Per Si.com via New York Post (heh)

-There have been rumors about a possible impending trade of Jets LB Jonathan Vilma because he's not a perfect fit in the 4-3 defensive scheme. "Jon is on the team. I'm glad he's here," GM Mike Tannenbaum said. Tannenbaum, however, declined to say Vilma, or any other player on the roster, is "untouchable."

... so with all the talk about the Cards transitioning to a 3-4 D could the mad scientist known as Pendergast find creative ways to use Vilma outside the 3-4 (even if he's not the perfect fit he could be much better in a more conventional D than any linebackers on the current roster) as well as inside?

I think it'd be an option worth looking at, but folks would say "at what cost?".

The second round pick of the draft? Next year's first round pick? This year's first round pick?

At what point would a team say yes or no?

Wow. I'd have to think long and hard about this year's #10 pick. I think Vilma will be one of the top LBs in the NFL soon.

He would make a great pickup for this defense and we could move Dansby back outside.

Not if he's stuck in a 3-4 alignment, like he will be here, and he is in New York. The Giants should trade for him.

Nay right now. We need more picks, not less. I don't want any high-priced veterans who might be disgruntled at being traded to the worst franchise in the NFL.

I cant find any contract info for Vilma, but it appears he is entering the fourth year of his rookie deal. He will be prime for a nice contract.

you wanna switch a pro bowl MLB to OLB? nope. vilma (MLB) next to dansby (OLB) in a 4-3 would be sick though. maybe we should give ed hartwell a look. he played ILB next to ray lewis in a 3-4 (2003) and he was a terrific run stuffer

....until he left Baltimore.

But yeah, if we were to do one of those trade-downs involving a linebacker, THIS should be the guy, not Briggs. He's already one of the best MLBs in the league now (but a poor fit in a 3-4, as evidenced this past year) and excel with Watson and whoever in front of him.

Hartwell has been a walking infirmary the past 2 years

he's only played in 13 games and only has 63 tackles in 2005 & 2006

That's the second time in as many weeks as I've referred to the Cards' pick as "#10".
