Doan agrees to five-year deal with Coyotes

Another potential unrestricted free agent is about to be lifted off the market.

Sources tell TSN Phoenix Coyotes captain, Shane Doan has agreed to a five-year deal for a total of almost $23 million to remain with the organization.

Doan's agent JP Barry met with Phoenix management in Florida earlier this week and the negotiation continued through last night en-route to striking the deal.

The contract hasn't been signed and there are some "house keeping" issues to be resolved, but the key components, the term, the dollars and a highly coveted no-movement clause have been agreed to.

Doan, originally drafted 7th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1995 Entry Draft remains the only active player on the Coyotes roster who transferred to Phoenix when the franchise relocated in 1996.



Following the trade of Ladislav Nagy, Doan now leads the team in scoring with 19 goals and 35 points and has 11 points in his last 14 games.

He ranks third in all-time games played with the team, fifth in career goals and sixth in career points. He has also been the captain of the team since 2003-04.

The Coyotes are expected to officially announce the resigning of their captain on Thursday.

The Phoenix Coyotes are on the verge of signing their captain, Shane Doan, to a long-term contract.

Although the deal is not yet finalized, a source familiar with the negotiations said the 30-year-old Doan is expected to sign a five-year deal that will pay him an average of $4.5 million per season within the next day or so.

The Coyotes have scheduled a news conference for Thursday, but would not reveal the reason for the event.

Doan, the only member of the team who was with the franchise when they moved from Winnipeg to Phoenix after the 1996 season, could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

A gritty, talented forward, Doan was highly coveted by a number of teams, either as a rental player for the balance of this season or as a potential long-term signing. But the Coyotes have long insisted they believe Doan is an important part of their team moving forward.

"He's skilled and physical and a very good person," the source told ESPN.com Wednesday afternoon. "He's a very dedicated guy."

Word of the imminent signing comes two days after the Coyotes traded top scorer Ladislav Nagy to Dallas for a first-round draft pick and forward Mathias Tjarnqvist.

Doan, the seventh player chosen in the 1995 draft, has 35 points in 48 games this season, although he's been hampered by injury. He had a career-best 30 goals last season and was named to Canada's Olympic team.

The Coyotes, who will miss the playoffs for the fifth time in six seasons, are also fielding calls on forward Owen Nolan, who has played well for the Coyotes with 31 points in 56 games after being out of hockey for more than two years. The former San Jose Sharks captain could become a free agent in July, as well.

Along with Nagy, the Coyotes had previously traded center Mike Comrie to Ottawa. The two players represented about $6 million against the salary cap this season. Along with the monies paid to Nolan and Jeremy Roenick, neither of whom is expected back in Phoenix, the Coyotes look to be major players in the free-agent market this summer, especially in terms of adding offensive punch and a goaltender.

Azcentral.com is reporting Doan is signed to a 5 year deal.

Here's a perfect example of a situation where nice guys do finish first. Doan is alright, but probably more like a 2nd or 3rd line player, and this team really needs some scoring power, but he is fan favorite on a team with few recognizable players left.

Next year this team will be without Ricci, Roenick, Cujo, and rumors point to Nolan being gone also. Who would be left for fans to recognize? I think this signing is as much about keeping the face of the organization as it is about signing a hockey player.

I'm pleased with the signing, I have no doubts he would have commanded well over $5M a season in free agency. With the cap reportedly going up from $44M to $50M for next season, $4.6M for a player of Doan's ability is a solid deal. Now we just have to find ourselves a first line center this summer.

As far as salary, Nolan would be very cheap as a playoff rental. But, what would the Coyotes ask for him? I would think a 3rd or 4th line player that has some potential. After all, Nolan is a proven commodity who can step in anywhere. So it Perreault.

Interesting that the 'Yotes have indicated they want to re-sign Tellqvist and Zigomanis. Both good signings, but I would think should go after re-signing Perreault as well.
