Does anyone know why the clock didn't run

Before the Steelers last play on offense BigBen was sacked, there was a holding penalty which was declined by the Cardinals. Why did the clock stop? And if its because of the penalty, why didn't it start again when we declined the penalty? Essentially the holding penalty seemed to operate as a time out for the Steelers.

They panned to the Cardinals sidelines and it looked like the staff and players were losing it, screaming at the refs to start the clock. What about the ten second runoff? Does it apply here and if so, why wouldn't it? It seemed completely ridiculous to me, as though the refs were trying to do everything possible to cause another legendary collapse. What the hell?

Because we declined the penalty. Thus there is no penalty.

If that is the case, the clock should have been restarted after the referee respotted the ball. The run off only occurs on presnap penalties if I am not mistaken.

Exactly, a sack should end the game there or at least cause a really screwed up, last second play. At the very least the clock should start at the exact second we decline the penalty. I don't get it.

But that would mean the play was a sack, and the clock should run. The team that would have been penalized shouldn't get rewarded.

Your not gonna get an argument out of me.

what is the email address of the head official again. I will shoot them an email.

Risen also goes through that. It would be a good thing to bring up for that segment.

I think the play clock should start as soon as the official puts the ball in a position to be snapped. At that point, the head official blows his whistle, does that stupid movement by pulling his arm down, maybe then start swinging it around like he's doing the backstroke, and the clock rolls.

That's my thought process at least.

I think the Cards expected that judging by their body language on the sideline that the TV cameras did a good job of capturing.

Meanwhile, Ben runs to the sideline to make sure he has the right play, goes to a huddle, and then takes the team up to the line.

Ridiculous, if the way it played out yesterday is the actual rule, it should be changed.

Absolutely ridulous, especially since, as in the Rams game 2 years ago, where they hit us with a ten second runoff, the ref literally runs up to the line, puts the ball in play and runs the clock. It takes very few seconds. So they have the process and place to assure teams don't benefit by stopping the clock on a penalty, they just didn't use that process here. Either because of a ridiculous rule, or because this crew was too stupid and lazy to enforce the rule. I'd love to know which.

Again, 10 second runoffs occur on presnap penalties.

Understood, but my point is, the referees have a process in place to set the ball and immediately run the clock. I can't understand why that wouldn't apply here. Either its a rule that essentially allows a team that is in a playclock emergency situation to stop the clock with a penalty or these refs are just so inept they allowed that to happen here.

Obvious conspiracy like the "illegal" Wilson hit at the end of the Baltimore.

I wasn't asking for a 10 sec run off, I just think that after the cards decline the penalty, or even if they don't decline the penalty, the ball should be placed ready for a snap and the clock should immediately be started. The team should not get the benefit of a stopped clock and a huddle.

I know, and I agree. I'd still email Risen, or whomever I need to, If I knew their address.

That would be awesome brother, it seems like something there's got to be an answer to. Clearly, the Cards thought the clock should start so either they are wrong or the refs are.

I will ask one more question:

last play of the game-- it was either a clear false start, or a clear offsides --

both of which were ignored -- and then Fathead throws the pick ending the game.

As soon as I saw the pick, in my long time Cardinal induced paranoia -- I immediately looked for a late flag.

Anybody else see that?

I didn't look for it.

I did email Eisen though. We shall see if they discuss it.

PS Has anyone figured out what "illegal contact in the pocket" is that was called on Dansby?

I saw that, too and was surprised to see no flags. Looking at it again in slo-mo, the line judge was looking right at the play, so I'm not sure how we got away with it, as it looked clearly like an offsides. OK with me, we get screwed so many times we're due for some karma like that.

it was "illegal contact while the qb was in the pocket"

if a QB rolls out, you can have contact with WRs -- defenders dont know if it is now a QB running play or still a pass--

while the QB is still in the pocket -- hands off the WR

during the play in question -- Fathead ended up rolling out of the pocket and throwing an incompletion
