I found it kind of interesting that Marty Shottenheimer was not fired and it made me wonder about the Chargers draft plans. Most experts have the Chargers taking a quarterback with the first pick and why not (Drew Brees hasn't shown to be the answer and Flutie is at the end of the line). However, does the fact that the Chargers didn't fire Shottenheimer show that they think they are close to being good and are only a few immediate impact pieces from winning?

How did Marty Shottenheimer win in the past?

Answer-Great defense and a great running game. Shottenheimer has the premier back in the league in my opinion (Ladanian Tomlinson). Tomlinson did all of that damage playing mostly against 8 man fronts and a patchwork offensive line. They do have David Boston to take off some of the pressure, but they need someone else to be a go to guy.

I believe that the Chargers will play the (were drafting a quarterback card for as long as they can, maybe even until they are literally in the 15 minute clock), but they will bail and will look to trade down a few spots to take one of 4 guys (Gallery OT, Winslow TE, Taylor Safety, or Tommie Harris DT).

My money is on Kellen Winslow Jr. The Chargers haven't had a superstar at that position since his dad played in the late 70's and early 80's. The Chargers are kind of like the Cardinals, always trying to find an indentity and Winslow Jr. could give Marty the offensive identity he is looking for.
1. Great running back (Tomlinson)
2. Potentially great wide receiver (Boston)
3. Potential franchise (Tony Gonzalez level) Tight End.
(Winslow)
4. A young a still talented quarterback (Drew Brees)

I look for the Chargers to trade down to #3 with the Cardinals and then trade down again with possibly the Redskins who will then take either Roy Williams or Larry Fitzgerald with the 3rd pick. The Chargers then should still be able to land Winslow Jr. plus pick up some players and picks in the process. As for the Cardinals I have my own conspiracy theory. I believe part of the interviewing process with Jim Fassel and Denny Green was a promise by Rod Graves that he would do anything and everything to move up to get his guy (Eli Manning). Rod Graves has done everything he said he would do. He restructured contracts, he expressed frustration over Mac and Mac got fired, it was rumored for weeks that Denny Green was a potential replacement and he was hired, and it has been reported by Mike Jurecki that Rod Graves would have taken Eli Manning last year if he would have come out.

I see the Cards parting with their #3 overall, their 2nd round pick, and one of the following (Adrian Wilson, Renaldo Hill, Levar Fisher, or Raynoch Thompson) to move up to the #1 slot for Manning.

It'd draft time!! The fun and the speculation begins.

I agree that the Chargers won't take Manning and that they will likely trade down. I don't think they want to go lower than #3 because they would probably lose out on the guy I think they really want, who is Gallery.

I think we could move up without having to give S.D. the farm.

How about this:

San Diego trades it's number 1 (1st overall) for

Arizona's number 1 (3rd overall), number 3 (64th overall-first pick of 3rd round), and 2005 number 2.

Let's be realistic about the Chargers switching their #1 with our #3 plus our #2 (33rd overall) plus a player........( you have suggested one of either Fisher and Thompson...... both former 2nd round picks). That's just ridiculous thinking.

Where the heck are you guys coming from.........your suggesting we give up the farm to move up two places......when it's highly unlikely that either SD and or OAK will be taking a QB. Come on......post realistically please

With their curent situation the Chargers might be better off trying to aquire a veteran QB rather than drafting and playing the year with a rookie.

At least that is what I am hoping for.

So if SD can't find a decent trade down senario what do they do? Is Mannig the consensus no. 1 pick or could he reasonably fall to number 3?

We won't move up. If anything, we move down. However, we probably will stay at 3 and take the best available.

There. I covered all my bases.

I wouldn't be so sure about the Chargers not taking Eli. According to several things that I have read and heard (mostly rumors but from normally relaible sources)... Drew Brees is on the trading block.

If this is true, does that mean that they are trading Brees to draft Eli or simply get a QB on the FA market and trade down?
