2 BOB's gone . . . 1 to go
Once upon a time, a BOB (Brenley, that is), despite managing the D'backs to a World Championship (with the help of two superstar pitchers), was let go.
He had diffuculty communicating directly with his ballplayers. They would read about what their Manager thought about them in the newspaper. He was more comfortable with the Press than with the team.
Then, another BOB (Bank One Ballpark) left the scene when Chase Bank (formerly Chase Manhattan) took over. In the words of our Bank One branch manager, "Those people in New York have no idea what goes on in Arizona."
Two BOB's gone . . . one to go.
I'm getting tired of reading about MELLLL-vin and his "a little" comments to the Press. Our pitching is a little off. Our hitters are a little slow. Our fielding is a little weak.
His lethargy is dragging down the team. And, as we all know, he doesn't know how to prepare young players to excel.
Two BOB's gone . . . one to go.
By the way, I don't agree with those who say that we should have kept Wally Backman. Neither extreme is going to produce long-term success. Not a Manager who snoozes through a season. And not an alcoholic abuser.
The answer, as in most cases, lies in the middle. A leader, in control of both his team and himself. One who knows when not to put his players into a frenzy, but also knows when to light a fire.
I know that Bret Butler is earning a reputation as a good Manager in our Minor League system. But is that because he's growing into a solid Manager, or one who is an excellent hitting/baserunning/bunting coach?
What are your opinions?
