Deal for receiver Boston is close

The Dolphins ask David Boston to meet with Dave Wannstedt and also agree to a six-year, $23 million deal for offensive tackle Damion McIntosh.

The Dolphins moved closer to finalizing a trade for San Diego wide receiver David Boston by requesting Boston fly to South Florida in the next few days to meet with coach Dave Wannstedt.

According to a report in The San Diego Union-Tribune that was confirmed by an NFL source, the request follows two days of negotiations between the Dolphins, Chargers and agent Mitch Frankel, who represents Boston. While a firm agreement is not in place, the sides are apparently close enough that coming to terms appears likely.

The Dolphins did reach an agreement with one of Boston's teammates in San Diego last season, coming to terms with offensive tackle Damion McIntosh on a six-year, $23 million contract. The Dolphins will now cross their fingers that they can get McIntosh healthy in time for next season.

To cover themselves in the event that McIntosh isn't ready, the contract is heavily backloaded and includes a signing bonus of only $300,000. In addition, the Dolphins signed unrestricted free agent offensive lineman John St. Clair to a two-year, $2.6 million contract.

St. Clair said he was told by the coaches that he would be the starting right tackle for now and was told that McIntosh probably wouldn't be ready to practice until September.

As for Boston, the Dolphins spent part of the day working on language of a revised contract.

The key in the deal is that San Diego wants to recoup as much of the $6.9 million Boston is guaranteed over the next two years. The Dolphins are willing to do that, but want to structure the deal in terms of incentives.

The goal is to have the deal worked out by Monday.

DOLPHINS FAVORED

The Dolphins are among at least three teams that have strong interest in Boston. However, they are the clear favorite to get him because of his strong relationship with Dolphins wide receivers coach Jerry Sullivan from their days in Arizona.

McIntosh, who had surgery Tuesday on his right ankle, agreed to a deal that is heavily backloaded to protect the Dolphins from serious salary cap problems.

McIntosh, who has suffered from ankle problems in each of the past two seasons, is expected to be out four to six months, and there is some concern he might not play at all this season.

LITTLE RISK

The Dolphins didn't risk much this season on the deal, that includes a $300,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $525,000 in the first year. That's a salary cap figure of only $575,000, a significant bargain if McIntosh can play right tackle this season as the Dolphins had hoped.

With roster bonuses payable only if McIntosh is healthy, he could earn a total of $1.2 million this season in base salary and roster bonuses.

''It was difficult and it was perplexing, but it's rewarding we were able to reach an accord,'' agent Steve Feldman said. McIntosh, 26, is a graduate of McArthur High in Hollywood and was a third-round draft pick in 2000 from Kansas State by San Diego.

On Monday, a contract McIntosh had signed with the Dolphins fell apart when he failed a physical. The deal was for the same total amount of money, but included a $3 million signing bonus.

The situation became a public relations problem when the Dolphins called and then canceled a press conference to introduce McIntosh.

McIntosh, who has played only left tackle in the NFL, became a starter in 2001 with the Chargers. He received a strong recommendation with the Dolphins from former offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who was San Diego's offensive coordinator in 2001.

The signing of McIntosh and St. Clair makes it likely the Dolphins are out of the ever-thinning right tackle market for now

Come on MIA sign Boston before SF can.

I think SD has been looking for an excuse NOT to take Eli/Ben. This is it. They are off the hook.

Does anyone think they will NOT take Fitz or M Williams.

And OAK well they sure could use a WR too maybe they take Gallery.

It seriously looks like Fitz won't be there for DG :(

and M Williams might not be there either :(

DG bites the bullet and takes
a sure fire can't miss in Gallery
at least Josh will have time back there even if he might not have more then 1 WR to throw to.

Still think they will take Manning and a wr on round two as there is plenty of depth at wr but not many franchise type qbs like Manning. I'm still convinced that either Fitzgerald or Mike Williams will be there at #3 and be the choice.

They may not want to have Boston on the team because they ARE drafting Manning. Think about that.

azjam DG does always seem to get his man somehow I was thinking about that when Fitz was allowed to enter the draft as a soph and then M Williams too. Imagine this draft without those 2 guys in the mix.

Today, 3/14/2004, things look ugly in the Boston trade.

Boston vows he wants SD to pay everything he feels owed by them.

SD says it won't pay a cent for a guy who won't play for them. and are considering filing paperwork for a clause Boston had in his contract to void $3 million they "owe" him for conduct detrimental to the team.

Miami wants Boston's contract to be incentive laden, but Boston's agent is crying foul since the Dolphins had only 5 teams that threw less TDs to their WRs!

 :D

I would love to rip Boston but this is all on SD. They wanted Boston. Boston was Boston just like Meyshawn was Meyshawn. What do they expect? And now they want to get rid of him with no penalty ain't going to work. You make a mistake in siging someone you gotta pay. That is the way life works. No takebacks.

MIA wants to get him cheap with incentives. Smart move on their part. But again Bostons doesn't have to cave SD owes him a lot of money. They gotta pay him what they owe him. Why should he let them off the hook? They wouldn't let him off the hook if they had the hammer over him.

Boston just needs to make sure he gets as much money as is owed him. He didn't sign himself to that deal SD did.

Boston has a clause in his contract that if he gets suspended the team can recoup that 3 million dollars. Boston was suspended for one game last year for fighting with the team trainer. So yeah in a way they have the right to recoup that money since they cover their own self since Boston is a walking timebomb.

That's true, IF Boston put forth an honest effort to earn his contract. Last season he used questionable excuses to stay out of games. He displayed mutinous behavior towards the coaching staff. In one game the ball was coming to him in double coverage and he just gave up on the play, didn't try to catch it or try to break up the resulting interception, even the commentators said it was the worst quit on the ball they had ever seen. He also refused to submit his training "supplements" to the Bolts who were concerned about illegal supplementation. Yes, the Chargers signed a bad contract, but they also included a clause regarding this behavior in the contract that was approved by the league and player's association, and of which league sources said the Chargers can win if it goes to arbitration. No, Boston can start over fresh, or the Chargers can drag this out and make an already tarnished reputation in AZ and SD even worse. That Miami wants to take a chance after he has burned two coaching staffs is a miracle. Boston needs to think about that. One article I read in the Miami Herald says Boston's friends are urging him to start over fresh with Miami since they feel he needs to rebuild his reputation at this point. Right now, the ball is in Boston's court as to what happens. The Bolts will file Monday to protect their position legally, but the action can be delayed if a deal is imminent.

Personally, I was dismayed we signed Boston and was happy we signed Lassiter. Lassiter has always seemed to be a warior to me!! :) Most SD fans were the opposite about the signings. I knew better since I read about Boston in the Republic a lot! :) And reading this board put a lot into perspective! :)

Once he gets in Miami he can either be his old 2001 probowl or just a bodybuilder in Miami beach. Either way thank god he's not here anymore.

Yuma you should see him play around the 2000 season here. Damn I was ready to pull my hair. If Jake throws a duck and it gets intercepted he just runs to the sidelines and won't tackle the guy!!! or halfway blocks in the running game!!! Good riddance.
