I thought it said that it was protected only if it wasn't in the lottery. Given this team and what the future holds with it, if it's just lotto protection, then they'll definitely get it in 2007.

That is the way I read it also, but I assumed it was a mistake in the wording. I agree that with his Phoenix Suns team anti-lottery protection would make it less likely that New York got it anytime soon. It just doesn't make sense that anybody would do it that way.

Hey, did you not read this in the long 33 page thread....it is on page 32.

It does not give all the details but does say more about the pick.

The Deal Is Done: Richardson Traded For Thomas
NY Post - 06/24 - 2:34 AM EST
As first reported by RealGm.com, the Knicks and Suns agreed to their second trade in 17 months with Kurt Thomas being shipped to Phoenix for 6-6 swingman Quentin Richardson and a protected, future first-round pick.

The first-round pick can be used by the Knicks at the earliest in 2007 but is protected beyond the lottery. The delay in announcing the deal involved a minor insurance issue regarding a prior Richardson back injury that's not likely to kill the deal.

For months, Isiah Thomas has said he's planning as if Allan Houston is not on the team next season. A new collective bargaining agreement clause paves the way for the potential waiving of the arthritic-kneed Houston. The Knicks would be liable for the two years and $40 million left on his contract but would not have to pay additional dollar-for-dollar luxury tax on the salary (another $40M). The Knicks can't approach Houston with the idea until mid-July when the CBA is signed. If Houston goes, only Michael Sweetney remains pre-Isiah.

Richardson, who signed a five-year, $37 million deal last July, will likely start at shooting guard with Jamal Crawford going to the bench. The Knicks took on $15 million in future salary. [READ]

Ugh.

I can remember back when I first hear about KT's contract. My exact thought was, he's a Knick for life now, because no other team in the league will be willing to pay the back end of that monster.

And now it turns out that there is a team willing to take it on--the Suns!--and they're willing to give up a good player and a draft pick to make it happen.

I guess I owe Isiah Thomas an apology, don't I? :x

What's wrong with Thomas's contract? According to hoopshype, it tops out at $8.1 million in 2007-08, when he'll be 35 years old. I don't have a big problem with that.

My enthusiasm for this deal is certainly lessened by us losing a draft pick.

I not concerned about losing a draft pick in the late 20's, especially next year when the pickings will be a lot slimmer.

LOL

EVERYONE says that a year before the next draft, but when it comes along, there's guaranteed to be excitement over it.

Last year at this time if everyone thought we were getting the #21 this season, there would be groaning all over the place. Yet this year there is a ton of interest in who we will pick.

I have also heard that it is a player option. Also this would be good for the Suns if they could trade an expiring contract for another player or players to a team that would need cap space maybe we can call up the Knicks again in a few years. :)

with the influx of young talent in this draft and the age requirement next year's draft, and many more for the foreseeable future (but next year's in particular) will be a great deal more shallow.

I guess at the time, I didn't think Thomas had the size or talent to keep playing effectively after he'd lost a couple of steps. :|

A lot of that is because some think some local products could fall, Diogu and Frye. There aren't any big name Arizona or ASU available next year. Last year it was a big disappointment when we traded #7 and Iguodola was still on the board.

Everyone thought we would be getting a lottery selection this year, Damn Bulls. This is where we normally pick (around the mid 20's) and have to settle for a Casey Jacobsen, Oliver Miller etc. I am sorry but this year there is some potential at #21.

There could still be a lot of groaning depending on who's available and which future 160lb. European "power forward" bust the Suns front office falls in love with. Or, the Suns could go with a safe, earthen-bound college player who will be putting their accounting degree to good use in three years. Or, the Suns could go with an athletically-gifted, ethically challenged teenager who will fall asleep during practices and ride the pine for four years as the fans wonder why the coach is so insane as to be sitting such a formidable talent.

Any way you look at it, the No. 21 pick is unlikely to be as exciting as we think it will be before the draft. We'll look back on this in a year and, with 20-20 hindsight, wonder why the Suns didn't have the foresight to draft the future All-Pro some team picked up with the 44th pick.

I've been doing this for a few years, and after buying into the hype of an 8th-round Bulgarian who didn't speak English and no amount of pixie dust could lift his feet off the ground, I remain interested but not emotionally involved. That's the safe bet, no matter where the Suns are picking.

You are right of course, but a true fan still gets excited about his team drafting a future star!! :)

And, the suns may be working on a trade as we speak to move up in the draft to make it more exciting!!

I'd be excited if the team had the #60th Pick...

I don't always agree with the Pick made though... I just really like the Draft and it's that much better, if the Suns have a Pick.

And yes it does get frustrating sometimes, the Suns Trading so many Picks but that means Trades and Trades are exciting as well, because as much I like watching gamefilm of CB... I record Suns games and I plan on watching Kurt Thomas in action, if it's almost every single game played against the Suns - I have all the way back to 96-97. :D

:p I did watch all of Q's but KT is a vet and I plan on only watching this years.

I just love watching Basketball, NBA, WNBA, College, H.S, International, etc - I probably don't have any great judge of talent but it's fun trying, and watching as much as I can.

The difference between you and me is you have hope and I swallowed the poison pill of cynicism a long time ago. You have life and I'm the zombie sports fan, coming back to eat your brains. Or at least to make you as sour and dead inside as me.

This, of course, is why I became a sports writer.
