I was home sick for 2 days and watched quite a bit of ESPN. Kiper said yesterday that right now Sean Taylor will go 3-5 in the first round! THat's just about unheard of for a safety, but Kiper said right now there's 5-6 guys at the top of the draft but juniors getting in will make or break the draft.

He didn't say but I would guess 4 of those 5 are Manning, Williams, Taylor, Ben R and beyond that I don't know. It's Kiper so take it with a grain of salt but when asked how many Miami players go in round 1 he said 4 for sure, maybe 5 and possibly 6. He listed Vernon Carey and Wilfork as "possible" first rounder along with Taylor, Vilma, DJ Williams and Winslow. As recent as 2 weeks ago Wilfork was a lock top 5 and now Mel is calling him a possible first rounder? and I believe Vince has already said he's coming out so it's not that Mel doesn't think he'll be in the draft.

I was checking tapes yesterday to find an old one to tape over(to get the Sebastian Telfair game today on ESPN 4pm west coast time) and found the tape of the early draft this year. When we were on the clock after taking Johnson ESPN was talking about us and after saying they expected 2 defensive picks in round one, they then said they liked the JOhnson pick, but Kiper preferred Jacobs as a more polished WR. His comment on Johnson was until his senior year he dropped a lot of passes, he stopped doing that as a senior, and if that is now the real Johnson, good pick, if he reverts to his past, could be a problem. Pretty good call by Mel. Of course Jacobs has only 3 catches in Washington and has only played in 8 games so Johnson has done much better than him.

Jaws actually wanted us to take Boller who he had rated ahead of Leftwich but behind Palmer as the #2 QB in the draft on his board. They were arguing over the idea because we had Blake and Boller would sit behind him for 2-3 years. jaws said he wouldn't if you took him in round one you'd play him fairly early, but all 3 guys agreed Blake was a solid player who just needed a chance although Jaws said if we don't get any better deep threats at WR, Blake would have problems because he's a QB that needs the deep threat to open up the rest of the field. again what a great call by Jaws.

They also talked up Mac said he'd turn things around if he got time and they were praising Marmie too, which was really mind boggling after they'd spent 5 minutes with Golic and company just ripping the defense, last in sacks 3 years running, need help at CB on and on and then but Mac and Marmie are not to blame?

Jaws is the man. I love listening to that guy.

Regardless of position, Sean Taylor could be the best player in the country. Seriously who's better than this guy?
Every bit the size and speed of Wilson too.

We need the entire first round more or less.

I love Taylor too but a telling comment, Jaws was showing our pass defense and saying what was wrong. We were in cover 2 against the Rams and Faulk ran a middle route into the open hole. According to Jaws, Bulger is late on the throw it should be there at about 20 yards, but he threw it 25, didn't matter. They showed the blocking and at 3.2 seconds when Bulger released the ball, all 4 Cards DL's were "stoned" and Bulger was able to hold the ball longer and still get the ball off easily. Faulk gained about 40 yards on the play and Golic chimed in "nothing wrong with the coverage they just had to cover for too long.

Now with all the injuries it's coverage too and we need help at CB but even a guy like taylor won't solve the problem of not enough pass rush. I'd certainly like to take Taylor and trade Wilson, but I sure wish we could get a pass rusher as well.

They all seemed to be saying nothing wrong with the scheme, just didn't have the pass rush to make it work.

Wonder how much Kearse is going to want if he hits the market?

We filled enough "belly" positions last offseason. We need at least one playmaker.

Pace looks freaking horrible as a pass rusher. It looks like he's playing containment against a guy like Vick, on Every Single Pass Play.

nice work Russ. It is interesting tio hear that the schemes are good schemes, but we don't have the people to do it properly.

THEN CHANGE SCHEMES to fit you strenghts.

Note that was a play from 2002. I don't necessarily agree about the schemes, cover 2 is fine but the rush 3 defense we play so often is a crappy scheme.

But their point was yes they need help at CB too, but the real problem with that defense is the total absence of a pass rush.
Pace is hopefully going to get better and Johnson has improved but we gotta get a REAL pass rush from somewhere, a guy like Kearse, Ellis, Wistrom, a DT like Wilfork or Harris, we gotta get a couple of guys in here that can make an impact or no matter who we play in the secondary we're going to get picked apart again next year.

A first round pick. For example, Washington had to give the Jets a first rounder for Coles.

Is it based on which tender offer is given (I think there are a couple to choose from) or is it first rounder across the board?

He asked what you got for the maximum tender and that is a first rounder.

There are 2 other tender levels below that.

Yep.

Do you know the timing on it, can a team wait until AFTER the draft to sign an RFA so that the first round pick is next years and we're not giving up potentially the first pick? I'm pretty sure you can but not positive.

Usually the last day to submit a qualifying offer for a Restricted Free Agent from another team is the week before the draft.

For example, in 2002:

The last day to sign another teams FA was April 15th

The last day for a team to exercise their right of first refusal to restricted free agents was April 19th

Then the Draft started on April 20th.

This was the same thing we were all saying at this time last year. I hope that we do not repeat our mistakes and fix our DL and our pass rush. We need probowl quality guys not rookies. Pace may work out and I hope he does because we blew a first round pick on him but he has not been the answer.

We need a DE, DT, CB, QB, 2 WR this offseason. That's alot.

Right but if one of the lower tenders are opffered and the player is signed by another team, what round pick is given up then? I assume not a frist rounder right?

correct.

mid level tender gives you something like a third rounder

the lowest level gives the a pick equal to the round where the player in question was drafted or something like that.

Oops I made a mistake:

High level tender is (First and a Third)

Mid Level tender is a (First)

Low Level tender is (round where the player was selected)

This years numbers were:

High = $1.75 million
Mid = $1.3 million
Low= $600,000

Coles was only given a mid level tender of 1.3 million and that is why the Redskins only had to give up their first rounder.

On the tender issue, etc.

I take it --- that it does not preclude a trade with a team, who has tendered one of their own players, for less than a first rounder...
