Say we get to the 26th pick in the draft, and the following guys are on the board. Who would you take and why?

I wouldnt angry with any of them expect for Mike Iupati. Dude just isnt even on my board, first I dont think we need a gaurd, second I just dont think he is all that he is being cracked up to be.

Right now and this might change if Cody continues to loss weight going up to the draft I rank them as such

Weatherspoon, Cody, Wilson, Hughes.

Weatherspoon as he is the leader that this team has needed at linebacker for the past several years. Leadership, accountability, & hard work are difficult qualities to pass up..

My answer differs depending on whether we sign Porter/Foote or not.
These guys are 1 to 2 year stop gaps at best. I'm actually counting on signing them (I know, I know...chickens before they hatch and all). I stil say Weatherspoon should be taken if he's there.

Terrence Cody. Finding a franchise NT has to be one of the priorities for any team running a 3-4. Have all the LB's you want, but without a main cog in the middle occupying blockers, freeing the LB's up to make plays, the LB's effectiveness will get greatly decreased.

You beat me to the punch. I never thought Cody would be droping down to or around the lower 1st. You can have 4 P. Willis's as your LB but if they are getting blown up by 320 lb O-Lineman is a moot point. Fix the D-Line and the Line backers will become better.

Weatherspoon. Pick him and the WILB position is set for the next 10 years. Also, the biggest current need on our defense.

Kiper and McShay, in their latest mock, have us taking Hughes with Weatherspoon still on the board. He is picked by NO to replace Fujita.

I usually loathe polls, but this one is fun.

I voted for Kyle Wilson because I feel both our CB's (not just DRC) have to be aggressive breaking to the ball and, although Toler might be ready to step up and replace McFadden, it doesn't hurt to have a 3rd one for depth and nickel situations.

Prediction: Wilson might be gone by the time we pick, but the good news is that a couple of higher-rated guys not on the list will probably fall to us at #26.

Regarding Cody - Maybe he'll lose even more weight, but right now he looks as though he'd benefit from wearing a training bra.

We are in nickel or dime 60% of the time, so DRC, Toler and MacFadden will all be on the field.

I believe that our defense is best built by strengthening up the middle. I know Cody is there, but I am concerned about his weight issues. He times very slow too, and will only get slower. I believe that Weatherspoon is the BPA up the middle right now.

This is another reason to draft a skill position guy in the first round rather than a NT. Neither Cody or Dan Williams will be playing 60% of the snaps in the game. It is hard to swallow spending a 1st rounder on a guy who will only play 40% of the defensive snaps, not to mention Cody's other red flags. McClain, Weatherspoon, or Kyle Wilson in the first, or trade back. We can get Cam Thomas or Torrell Troup in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

Strengthening the front 7 and corner over the first 4 rounds, in whatever order, is my hope... but, like you, I'd prefer to go skill before the big uglies.

Weatherspoons the pick if he's there. Otherwise look for a faller or Kyle Wilson. Kareem Jackson is raising fast too. I'd have to considers the NT's but would rather trade down in the 2nd for Cody....it's a possibility. IT"S A deep draft>

Jeff, I agree with you. A CB in the first would go a long way to shoring up our secondary. Hughes, I believe, is an OLB and assuming we sign Porter, and have two young LB's backing up the starters, I don't see the need for another, with all of our needs. Witherspoon, if he can play ILB, makes sense, also. Personally, I'd go CB, and ILB in the first two rounds. But I have faith in our FO/Scouting Staff, and am sure they'll make the right call.

I went Cody only because I believe John Lott is the best Strength and conditioning guy in the nation and will make Cody as good as he can be. Might even turn him into a 3 down guy someday.

I'm not really wanting any of those guys in the first round. If I had to pick I would say Weatherspoon. I don't even really want him that much but at least he is an every down linebacker that should be pretty good in a couple of years.

I really liked Hughes a year or two ago, but his production fell off in his final college year. I'm also not sure he's agile enough to make the move from DE to OLB.

As far as LB is concerned, we need help both inside and out, but the job description for each position differs considerably. Whether or not we bring in Porter, I'd like us to wind up with a younger clone of him, and I'm not sure either Cody Brown or Will Davis is athletic or dynamic enough. We might want to eyeball someone athletic like Pierre-Paul, Gibson or Watson if one dropped to us. Another guy whose stock slipped significantly this past year but who's supposed to be Freeney-like in his pass rush athleticism is George Selvie.

I have no problem with Weatherspoon, but like my ILB's to either be (a) big run stuffers or (b) swifter heat-seaking missiles like Patrick Willis.

But that doesn't mean we shouldn't draft a LT or an interior lineman like Pouncey or Iupati with our first pick if the scouts rate him highest on our board. Or for that matter, a dual purpose DB like Cook, Berry or even McCourty. I also wouldn't rule out a DE like Kindle or (one of my favorite players coming out this year, Brandon Graham).
