An article out today indicates Drew Brees wants a long term contract with San Diego. It noted San Diego will probably franchise him at about $9 million and let Rivers spend the year on the bench learning and also see if Brees can repeat his outstanding year. Also noted San Diego could trade one of its young QB's. Who is there #3 QB? They could sure get a bundle for Brees on a trade if they went that route but would surely p---- the fans off if Rivers did not get them back to the playoffs. I think the article got it right. You franchise Brees and keep Rivers and see of Brees is a one year wonder or a real playoff QB.

The Chargers had 4 quarterbacks on the roster last season Brees, Rivers, Flutie and Cleo Lemon. From what I understand they were very high on Lemon and protected on the roster so no other team would pick him up. That may be the other young qb, he is out of Arkansas State and the same age as Brees.

The Chargers schedule next season is brutal, it is going to be very hard to replicate what they did this season. That may be a reason they move Brees now, because he could fold like a cheap suit next year when he runs up against a first place schedule.

They play at
NE
Indy (again they did last season as well)
Philly
NYJets
Wash
KC
Oak
Den

They play at home
Pittsburgh

Didn't they have the easies schedule last year? Year before last Brees on had a 67.5 QB rating. That's pathetic.

Last years non divisional road games were

Hou
Cle
Atl
Car
Indy

with
Den
KC
Oak

as divisonal

Philly, Indy, NE and NYJets are not going to drop off any from their playoff level of this year. If they plan on trading Brees I would do it while he has some market value, after next season he will not be as marketable. They might as well go with Rivers if they are going to have 5 automatic losses.

How much of the Chargers' cap space is going to be put into Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers?

I think if Brees is franchised it cuts 9M from their 20M.

My best guess is Brees will hold out as long as possible under the franchise tag, can SD realistically go the 1st 6 games with Rivers as the starter and then have Brees finish the season, and lets assume for a second that Brees and Rivers both light it up this year? Can they then afford to resign Brees long term or re-franchise him? Can they afford next year to take the cap hit of trading Rivers if they do resign Brees next year??? They can take a cap hit with Rivers and trade him this year but maybe not have the cap room next year to do so and still re-sign Brees long term, so if they wait til next year to make a decision they may have to let Brees go for nothing, as opposed to this year where they could probably get a couple of picks for him.

Drew Brees would be the greatest pickup for the cardinals ever. All time.

Who would the Cardinals trade for him. Would they give up their first rounder this year for him or their first rounder next year for him. Brees was an early second round pick but now may have elevated himself to a first round compensation.

Chargers need safties, OL or DB's.

Don't pay for a one time pro-bowler. Gus Ferrotte made the pro-bowl once too.

In my mind, what makes Brees a little different than other one-year wonders is how he got to be so good in one season. He worked his BUTT off. He spent the entire off-season watching film and working out - guys were saying that they'd stop by the practice facility periodically, and Drew was always there. Always. And, before the season started, Brees called a players-only meeting, just to show what kind of a leader he was.

He has also said that his goal was to be the best QB in the NFL, and to lead his team to a Super Bowl championship. And, that he wasn't close to either one of those goals yet.

I like his attitude, and his teammates love him.

Don't trade away the farm for him, but if opportunity presents itself, I say ya gotta take it.

What would the Cards be willing to part with though.

Pantone I see you live in Parker, I live in LoneTree, Co.

Yeah, the pricetag would probably be too high...

Lone Tree, huh? Yep - practically next-door neighbors...

Lets not forget that Rivers is still an untested commodity. His future "looks" bright but no one will ever know until he is put to the test.

Since we know we will never draft a top flight Qb lets face facts, bite the bullet and give 2 firsts for a qb with a long career ahead of him that is a proven winner and get it done with.
