We pay good money for larger screen TVs so why are DVDs played about 12-14 inches high. I get the wide screen bit but why the short screen?
Whats BS is that TV's are made in widescreen format now. Yet you still get the black bars on the top an bottom of the TV. That should be eliminated IMO.
That's exactly what I don't get. Why so much letterboxing on a widescreen TV set to 16:9 aspect ratio?

You still get black bars because movie producers do not always make their movies in 16:9 (standard widescreen) aspect ratio. We switched to widescreen to help eliminate the problem, but it won't fix everything. Tell movie producers to stop using 2.35:1, 2.37, 2.40 etc aspect ratios or better yet, build a home theater like I am.
It's not the producers as much as the directors. Directors usually make the call and usually do it for artistic reasons. There are some directors that will only shoot their movies in 2.35:1.
16:9 has made things better but not perfect.
Imagine if Lawrence in Arabia WASN'T in it's original aspect ratio. People should stop complaining. Widescreen 16:9 televisions are made for the standard widescreen ratio, which you see mainly in comedies and some dramatic movies. But big-time epic fantasy (like Lord of the Rings) are always going to be 2.35:1.
