What does an Eagles' beat writer think about the Commanders' trade for Deebo Samuel?

Jimmy Kempski covers the Philadelphia Eagles for PhillyVoice.com and weighed in on the Commanders trade for Deebo Samuel. Kempski offered he doesn't think the Commanders should have been praised for the trade because Samuel has declined since his banner 2021 season and that Samuel, in his view, attacked the 49ers kicker in a game against the Bucs last season.

Kempski summarized, "The Commanders entered the 2025 offseason loaded up with cap space. But it was unwise for an ascending team to use a healthy chunk of their spending money on a whiny, declining 29-year-old receiver who had one great season four years ago."

Many NFL fans will recall Eagles receiver A.J. Brown just last season, acting like he was really in deep thought reading a book on the sideline while his Eagles teammates on defense were out on the field.

Certainly, Brown used his antics to garner attention toward himself, and it was very successful, as he indeed received much extra attention. Only a naive person would think Brown was actually concentrating on a book when he knew he might be back out there very soon because the Eagles' defense often created turnovers and stopped opposing offenses repeatedly this past season.

Former Redskins running back and current 106.7 The Fan radio host Brian Mitchell also responded Friday to Kempski's criticism. Mitchell pointed out that the Samuel deal was only a one-year deal, and if Adam Peters was not satisfied with Deebo's performance and behavior, the Commanders would simply move on from Samuel in 2026.

Mitchell also offered, "I think the guys he replaced (Dyami Brown, Olamide Zacchaeus), yes, he is better than them. He does more than they do. Overall, I think it was a positive move for Washington. I don't think it was that negative at all. But receivers are whiny all over the damn league."
