Character issues aside, Mike Green is exactly what the defense needs. He's quick, bendy, and plays intensely.

Donovan Jackson gives the Cardinals an IOL stud to build around and upgrade over Evan Brown or battle it out with Adams on the interior.

Schwesinger can slowly be worked in as a starter at ILB and will bolster ST in the short run. He's quick, instinctive and would be one of the best off the ball prospects the Cardinals have had in some time.

Tez Johnson might be small and not super fast, but he's got some dog in him and he knows how to get open.

Ollie Gordon is my kind of back: big bruiser who punishes defenses.

Cornelius is a developmental tackle with good traits.

The Cardinals are offered a trade by Buffalo to move up to get Derrick Harmon who has an intriguing blend of traits. The Cardinals can make this trade because they can go quite a few ways and a lot of good players are still on the board. Getting the additional 2nd round pick is a massive win for moving down but still staying in the 1st round.

When Grant falls, the Cardinals call up the Vikings and shrewdly offer a package of two day two picks which the Vikings accept. The Vikings make this move because they want a CB and have the tier of available CBs all closely graded.

The Cardinals get a guy in Grant that they would have strongly considered with #16 if they had stayed. Grant adds another big body to the IDL and suddenly a group of Tomlinson, Grant, Robinson, Stills, Jones, and Nichols looks pretty solid. This is a group that should be better against the run and pass. There are a few guys who should be able to get some rush.

Taking Egbuka at this point would a make a ton of sense. Egbuka is a dependable multi role receiver who has excelled as a #2 in the past. He can play outside or in the slot, but I envision him being a slot and giving the Cardinals a receiver who can really block well on the inside.

I don't care where the pundits have Stewart ranked, he's going to go higher than many are projecting. Analytics say he was the best pass rusher in the nation and I envision him being the Hassan Reddick type rusher that's worked well in the Gannon scheme.

At this point in the draft it's time to gamble on an OL with some traits. Cameron Williams is a massive man. His game needs some work but he's worth the effort.

Tuten adds more speed to the backfield. The only RB the Cardinals have right now with plus speed. Tuten is a big play threat and could be tried as a return man as well.

Stutsman is an assignment sound football player with ok athletic traits and he's performed at a high level against decent competition. The Cardinals need to take some chances on some ILBs.

Finally, getting Rucker at this point in the draft gives some more insurance. I'd expect a good battle between Thomas and Rucker. Rucker is a very violent, intense pass rusher.

I'd put the odds of cards taking DL in the first 2 rounds at about 5%. Taking any DL at all is sub 50% in my book.

Those rooms are packed. We already have 7 iDL that are pretty locked in and normally only keep 6. We could eat $1.5m dead money for Collier, I think it's possible he could be a PS guy. We could eat $7m for Bilal Nichols, would be pretty much a wash cap wise but I don't see that happening after 4 games played.

I’ll take that bet.

The draft is rich with DL, so BPA on the generic board will very likely be a DL

The front office didn't bring in Campbell and Dalvin Tomlinson because there's a guy they really like in the top 50. There will be a lot of teams in this draft that won't take defensive line or edge players that have worse rooms than we now do, and it's not like next year's draft is bereft of talent in these areas.

I believe Monti brought them in to be competitive this year and NOT having to depend on a rookie in case Monti drafts a DT early.

As in the opposite of Keim, where he was forced to find starters in the draft.

If a DT is drafted early, Nicols and Collier are fighting for their roster spot

This is fine if you don't need the reduce to 53, but we do. There are simply too many contracts that are locked in. They already have 7 "locked in" guys for a room they normally keep 6. They could eat some money by moving on from Collier and Nichols to make way for a rookie but I just don't see that happening, not high anyway.

Maybe if they get to round 4 and they filled their most pressing needs and a guy like Norman-Lott is there they might take a punt, but otherwise I just don't see it.

I think the current DL roster does limit the ability to take a DL guy 4th round or later. Maybe even 3rd round. I don't believe it is prohibitive in taking a DL guy early. DL room in 2016 is Jones, Nichols, Robinson, Tomlinson and Stills with Jones and Nichols being easy contract outs.

We can disagree but I don't see Monti being willing to spend over 20 mil for Milton Williams in FA and then being ok with signing Calais Campbell and LJ Collier as alternatives. Thatdoesn't add up. And Dalvin Tomlinson is not the same type of player or role, so he doesn't count.

I think this is true. They tried this last year with Robinson and it blew up in their face.

Cardinals continue to add Smart football players who have High motors while filling some needs. Grant gets to learn from two of the best in Tomlinson and Campbell, Schwesinger is smart enough to compete for a starting role at ILB, Royals has decent size and is a smooth route runner, Stewart brings the Violence that Gannon loves:

He signed Dalvin Tomlinson as the alternative.

Where are these guys going to go this year on the roster? Robinson, Jones, Campbell, Stills and Tomlinson are absolute locks. That's 5 guys of the 6 they normally keep.

Of the two that remain, they gave Collier $1.5m guaranteed and he had 29 pressures last year, which was 2nd on the team and only 7 behind Tomlinson. Nichols have over $7m dead money and Monti would have to cut him after basically 4 games. I don't think it's impossible that either guy walks given relatively small dead money hits. But it also doesn't seem likely to me.

I was dubious about them drafting iDL before they signed Campbell, but for me that's the last nail in the coffin. I don't think a GM signs Campbell if there's a bunch of iDL they like.

It's not impossible, but I think the odds are low. Certainly high. I think you can argue it's one of the strongest rooms on the roster now. Certainly in breadth of talent.

Dalvin Tomlinson and Milton Williams don't do the same things on a defense. They signed Dalvin to upgrade/replace Roy Lopez and stop the run. Milton Williams is a pass rusher. Both Gannon and Monti have expressed how they need to rush the passer better. Monti has not made any multi-year signings that fill the Milton Williams role that they were offering over 20mil per year to him to fill.

I agree that Monti has built a room that the Cardinals do not HAVE to draft an IDL player in rounds 1 or 2, but I disagree that he is going to ignore any IDL that he has high draft grades on because they signed Calais Campbell and LJ Collier to 1 year deals.

and you cant overlook the fact that Mike knows the fans all love CC and bringing him back helps to salve the injury of the ticket price increases.
But we only have two quality players that possess a very important trait to Monti and JG...youth
as hard as good DL is to find, our cupboard will be bare yet again by 2027 if we do not draft a guy now...or at best we will be waiting/hoping a guy can develop.
If there is an interior guy who can collapse the pocket available...we need to get while the getting is good.

If the Cardinals draft IDL early, Nichols could be traded away post June 1 for a $5.8M cap savings. With a base salary of only $2.7M he shouldn't be difficult to trade.

Jones could be traded away post June 1 for an $8.1M cap savings, if a team is willing to take on his $7M salary.

Exactly! Nichols and Collier should not be a blocker if there is a future long-term starter potential available. And at a position where only 1 player has a contract longer than the next two seasons.
