scott burdow says that the diamondbacks originally wanted to keep schilling and get sexton - but that would have required someone to take matt mantei and his $7 million salary...and they tried every team and no one wanted him...so they went to plan B....burdow is on KDUS now..

From that story:

There has been no contact between him and the D-Backs regarding an extension, and every indication is he would be a “rent-a-player” — acquired for one year and then allowed to sign elsewhere as the Arizona payroll drops dramatically.
If a one year "rent-a-player" .... this deal is plain dumb!

Dumb, maybe.

But not all that unavoidable if the team's goal of a payroll in the $55.0 million range is the ultimate goal.

No way you can give Sexon the type of deal he is sure to command on the open market at the end of next year. Not when Gozo and Johnson are still on the payroll.

Shane Nance looks like he can be serviceable. He is a lefty who was probably going to be given a shot at Milwaukees closer role this Spring. He has a 92-95 mph fastball....maybe he keeps Jessie Orosco off the roster
