So rival DALLAS just landed Eddie Jones, huh?

As of right now, their roster looks like this:

Dampier / Diop
Nowitzki / Bass
Howard / Stackhouse
Jones / Buckner
Terry / Harris

Fazekas, George, Ager, Barea

Is this team better than the Suns? Perhaps not.

Is this team deeper than the Suns? Definately.

Would this team be better if only 1 Sun gets injured in the tight Suns 6-man rotation? Without a doubt.

What's the moral of the story? Suns need to add DEPTH!!!!!

This may be just a Pike type deal, but if it is more money it would reduce what the Mavs have to offer PJ.

I don't like how because of one series against Golden State people seem to forget how good Dallas is and that Nowitzki has come up big in the clutch against us before. This is also a better team than the one that beat the Spurs 2 years ago. I don't think the Suns are any better than they are and not having any depth, we'd need a lot of luck to get past them in the playoffs though I feel very confident if we can get the #1 seed.

jones is a good, not great, signing. provides them more depth. and another two guard with size that barbs won't be able to guard in the post.

Mavericks To Sign Eddie JonesAugust 3, 2007 - 6:07 pmDallas Morning News -
The Mavericks strengthened their depth at shooting guard and small forward Friday, agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with veteran swingman Eddie Jones.

Owner Mark Cuban confirmed the pending deal with the unrestricted free agent. Jones, 35, is expected to fly to Dallas on Monday where he'll take a physical and officially sign. He'll receive $1.83 million in the first year from the Mavericks' bi-annual exception.

The team still has its $5.3 million mid-level exception to use for another free-agent acquisition.

so Dallas still has the MLE as well. My call is they land PJ, killing two birds with one stone - they get a guy who can body up Duncan decently, while not being so deficient on offense like Diop and they hurt the Suns ability to put together any kind of big man depth.

that's a decent depth pick-up, especially considering Stackhouse's procilivity for injuries. Eddie's still been about a 10-12 ppg player for the last three years(save a 30 game stint with the Grizz this year when they were going ultra young and his minutes were all over the place), shooting the trey at a 37% rate.

I do not think Eddie Jones is much a threat to post up Barbosa or create mismatches offensively.

He was signed because the Mavericks wings were abused by much bigger, stronger, tougher Warriors wings. I think he helps somewhat in this area.

Jones is nothing more than a known name that used to be good in the late 90's. I am more worried about how much Howard and Harris improve their games than what Eddie Jones brings to the table.

Jones will never be in the game at the same time as Barbosa. Jones vs. Barbosa? Are you kidding me? Eddie Jones cannot run anymore, and Barbosa is like lightning on the floor. Eddie Jones doesn't scare me at all.

I'm still puzzled by the Mavs off season moves. I get the impression that Donn Nelson is NOT calling the shots, it's all Cuban.

When the Mavs got blown away by the Warriors, you would think they would have realized that their primary problem was the lack of a real point guard and an inside guy who can run and is not a liability on offense.

Here is Hoopshype's spin: http://www.hoopshype.com/market_center.htm

So what have they done?

1. Re-signed Devean George who has no offensive skills and is not big enough to play inside.

2. Signed Brandon Bass, an inside banger with no offensive skills.

3. Signed Eddie Jones who will be 36 in October and got a contract based on a few good months with the Heat after fading stats for several years.

I think they realized their primary problem was meeting the absolute worst matchup possible against GS, with the Coach that knew them best and the one team that has literally owned them for the last two years. They also probably realized that the Warriors are not coming back with the same team, which means they don't need to worry about them as much, putting them in their rear-view, while they can concentrate on getting better at beating the teams they know they'll have to beat, and have had varying degrees of success against, like us and the Spurs. They also didn't have a ton of opportunities to get that PG you speak of, either through FA or with their trade assets, thus, they've figured to get as good as they possibly can, making the best of their opportunities.

not sure why that's so hard to understand.

well said. just one year ago jason terry(and the rest of the mavs) looked pretty good at the PG position........now after one bad playoff series i guess it's time for the noose. He's not a great point guard in aspect of being a setup guy like kidd or nash.......but those guys are exceptions anyway. dallas also has a PG by the name of devin harris who is still very young. Remember it took nash a while before he broke out with the mavs. Not saying harris will be nash, but also it's not time to forget about him either. He is always a thorn in the side of the spurs. He is more of a set up(traditional PG) when compared to terry. He just needs to be more consistent.

that's a great point. The mavs were abused by golden state's guards. terry and harris were nightmare matchups for the much bigger stronger guards richardson/davis. and both harris/terry surprisingly disappeared at the offensive end in that series. buckner is a good defender, but is too much of a liability on the offensive end. jones will at least bring some size to the 2 position. and he is a spot up shooter.....which is all they need from him offensively. the mavs were very much interested in that wallace kid of the bobcats, but could not afford him. If the opportunity was there to add a stud 2 guard......i'm sure they would go after it as much as they could. they also have a young kid that they are trying to develop at that position(Ager).
