Edge should ned the year all things remaining equal at about or over 1300 yards. I don't think you mess with that.We do need a speed guy and I think JJ is the answer. JJ could be a Larry Centers type, used out of the backfield short passes he turns into 10-20 yard gains. As for Edge he has the Edge at least for next year.

Looking for help at RB in the draft - GREAT IDEA

Cutting Edge with an unproven rookie, Arrington & Shipp on your roster - HORRIBLE IDEA

That said, when you consider the state of the line's run blocking, 3.8 isn't horrible. I think it's clear James has lost a step, and it would probably be smart to invest in somebody who would actually be capable of sharing carries next year in case James falls off a cliff in terms of performance, but he's doing ok this year. He still runs hard.

With Edge -- what you get is this:

On a play thats blocked for a 3 yard gain -- he gets you 4 to 5.

The issue is that on those plays where its blocked for a 10+ yard run -- he gets caught at 10 where some guys take it 25+.

If you look at a guy like LT during an "average" game -- its a ton of 3, 4, and 5 yard runs, with one or two 20+ thrown in to up the average. Edge just doesnt get the long ones anymore.

Sorry but if that were true he would be above a 3.8 yard average. Edge grinds out tough yards no doubt. But more often then not when he gets wrapped up at the 3-4 yard mark he stays there.

Edge's bonus was pushed entirely onto the first year of his deal. His salary, and cap number, will actually drop from 5.25 mil to 5 mil next season. The Cards can easily take care of Fitz and Dansby without cutting James. Fitz's number HAS to be greatly reduced by an extension. If it isn't, that's a very bad sign IMO.

Edge bonus was not entirely pushed into the first year. Part of it was roster bonus and part was signing bonus. He still has 1.75 Mill per year of pro rated signing bonus to add to the base salaries you already listed.

i think you guys are too in love with the fact of having "a name" at running back then having a good running game. Sure edge is gonna break 1200 yards. He is gonna carry the ball over 325 times!

When is the last time he has broke a 50 yard run?
when is the last time edge busted a big one for a td?

that is what GOOD running backs do. Edge has not even had a 30 yard run since he was with the colts!!!

Edge isn't Barry Sanders. Yeah i'd love to see him break for a 90 yard TD run but he doesn't do that type of thing. He is a back that can pount it out and will get you an extra couple of yards after the first tackle (when he is playing well).

nobody said he had to be barry sanders the best running back of all time. It would be nice if he was in the top 50 of longest runs in the league and not the BOTTOM 50.

Are there better RBs in the NFL? Yep. Are there better RBs on the Cardinals? Nope. To cut Edge without having a better replacement would be idiocy. No being "in love" with anything...except having a decent back to hand the ball to.

I'm not sure if I'm reading your sentence correctly. Edge had a 30 yard run just about every year with the Colts.

I think that the main problem has been that too often this season the blocking has been set up for a 1-yard loss or a 1-yard gain, and Edge fought for 3 or 4 yards.

One play paints a perfect picture of Edge as a Cardinal for me, and that is the TD run against the Bengals.

He gets the ball, gets hit but still manages to stay on his feet and fall forward for the score.

here's my thoughts on Edge: Much better than what we've had at the position. Not much else to say.

He is saying since he came here from the Colts.
That's kind of what I thought but the wording didn't sound right for some reason. Anyway, I think Edge's lack of long runs is a non-issue. Even in 2000 when he had 1,700+ yards he only had 1 30+ yard run. He's just not that type of runner. I think too many people are enamoured with certain rookie RB's and don't realize homerun type of RB's aren't a dime a dozen.

Out of all the RB's in the league, eight of them have 6+ runs of 20+ yards: Parker, Peterson, LT, Jones-Drew, Westbrook, Barber, Fargas, Grant. 40, or so, other RB's have 5 or less. Long runs aren't very common and aren't really a huge factor overall. The last couple of weeks, Edge has 4.6 and 4.8 ypc so I don't have a problem with him doing that without a 30 yard run. Overall, it's actually a sign of consistantly good running if he can get close to 5.0 ypc and not have a big run to pad the average.
