It was the Erie Otters, and not the Saginaw Spirit, who largely played Thursday like they were the Memorial Cup's reigning champions.
The Otters, with one of the most productive 20 minutes in the Ontario Hockey League's postseason history, claimed the opening game of the teams' Western Conference first round series with an 8-5 road victory at the Dow Event Center.
Erie started the scoring with five goals in an exact five-minute span of the second period. Not done there, the visitors added three more for an unplayofflike 8-2 advantage by the second intermission.
Pano Fimis, Dylan Edwards, Sam Alfano, Callum Hughes and Malcolm Spence accounted for the five-goals-in-five-minutes binge at the expense of Saginaw goaltender Kaleb Papineau, who filled in for injured regular Andrew Oke.
Spence and Fimis followed with their second goals during that period, which bracketed Martin Misiak's score.
Shawn Bednard announced during Thursday's radio broadcast that the Otters' eight goals were the most in any Robertson Cup playoff period dating back to 1998, when the league's box scores were initially posted online.
Saginaw scored three times during the third period, although the last two were within the last two minutes. The Spirit actually led 37-25 in shots on goal, but Erie goalie Noah Erliden turned aside their first 14 during the scoreless first period.
If the Otters' game plan included making Spirit players not named Michael Misa beat them, they succeeded Thursday.
Misa's 134 points not only were the most over the OHL's regular season, but the entire Canadian Hockey League.
Erie held the center without a goal or an assist.
The Otters also limited Zayne Parekh to two assists. The defenseman, a former first round draft pick of the NHL's Calgary Flames, totaled 107 points during Saginaw's regular season.

The winner of Thursday's other conference series opener also did so by a comfortable margin.
Windsor, the West Division's titlist, defeated the seventh-seeded Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 7-2. The Spitfires recorded the game's last four goals, which included Noah Morneau's back-to-back scores.
The conference's other first round series, No. 6 Flint vs. No. 3 Kitchener and No. 8 Owen Sound vs. No. 1 London, begin Friday.
The OHL's current playoffs began a night after news regarding its next season.
Peterborough, one of four teams not involved in this postseason, won the lottery for the No. 1 overall pick for this year's priority selection draft. The Petes had the healthiest odds of winning (40%) based on theirleague-worst record of 18-41-4-5.
The Guelph Storm (second), Ottawa 67's (third) and Sarnia Sting (fourth) also learned when they'll choose during the first round. Erie will go 12th when its conducted April 11.
The league's 15-round draft concludes April 12.
