I heard an interview with the guy that created the character and wrote the show on NPR a few years ago. He was full on hooked on heroin at the time. Shooting up in the bathroom at work, all sorts of fun stuff.

Eventually he ended up holed up in some guy's garage in LA, around the time when the riots were going on.
He said one day, after living in this garage for weeks, without ever having opened the door or even leaving the house, he finally opened the garage door one day to look outside and there were ashes sort of floating around in the air from all the fires burning.
He said he just looked at the whole scene and it changed his life, all in the span of about 30 seconds.
