I think I found an alterior motive for E. Smith to hang around next year. After getting a touchdown against Miami, only three teams remain that he hasn't scored against: Jacksonville, Dallas and Houston (Texans). All three teams are on our schedule for next year.

I honestly hope he sticks around to be the #2 RB or #3 RB in 2005 as he is a great asset to the Cardinals young lockerroom both on and off the field.

I didn't like the signing of Smith when it happened. His greatest claim to fame in my opinion is durability and longevity. Emmitt was never an extremely fast RB, now at the twilight of his career his speed has even diminished from what it once was. Emmitt's greatest asset has been his ability to find the creases and take advantage. He still has a great nose for the goalline.

Granted Emmitt is having a decent year. But in the last few games I have noticed numerous times that the creases close before Emmitt can take advantage. The OL has taken a fair amount of criticism for not opening holes. There have been times, however, when the creases and cutback lanes have been there, Emmitt just can't get to them and downfield in time.

One of the greatest need of the Cardinals for 2005 will be to upgrade the RB position. I would love to have Emmitt back...

I was a huge critic of this club when they signed Emmitt and I have nothing but praise for him for the way he's played this year and led this team - but under ZERO circumstances do I want him on this club next year as een our #2 Running Back. He's a warrior, but he's definintely getting older and slower every week (except it seems when he gets within the 10 yard line - it still seems like he's somewhow almost automatic down there) and we need to finally get fresh legs back there.

Like him, yes. Nice guy once you get him away from the cameras.

Do we need him this year and is he doing well, yes.

Should he be back next year, absolutly not

There comes a time to hang it up. Smith is playing very good for his age but head to head with other #1 running backs he does not make the grade as a starter. He is one of my all time favorite players but we need to use the money elsewhere next year. RB is our number one priority next year if you exclude the QB position which no one seems to agree on. QB remains the most important position on any team so if Josh does not cut it then QB is our #1 priority. If he pans out then RB.
