ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith called out the Phoenix Suns in a tweet, pointing a finger at coach Mike Budenholzer after Sunday’s 148-109 loss to the Houston Rockets at PHX Arena.

“I’m still speechless as to how awful Suns this year. I mean, Damn! No sense of pride whatsoever. The Houston Rockets are real. Especially defensively. But they’ve got the Suns looking like they want no part of being on the court. I’ve got to look at Coach Budenholzer. The players are not buying in. Change has to come in Phoenix. I’ve seen enough.”

Phoenix suffered its worst margin of defeat all season Sunday, March 30. The Suns have had two 30-point defeats in its last three games with both being at home, with another double-digit loss in between on the road.

The defending NBA champion Boston Celtics blasted them by 30 points, 132-102, Wednesday, March 26, to snap Phoenix’s four-game win streak. The Suns followed that two days later with a 124-109 loss at the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Suns (35-40) trailed by as many as 42 points in Sunday’s loss to the Rockets (49-26), who are second in the West and 12-1 in their last 13 games. Kevin Durant suffered a left ankle sprain in the third quarter and didn’t return to the game.

Phoenix is now 1½ games behind Sacramento (36-38) for the 10th seed and final play-in spot in the West and trail Dallas (37-38) by two games for the ninth seed. The Kings play at Indiana Monday while the Mavs host Brooklyn.

Phoenix begin a three-game road trip Tuesday at Milwaukee in the return game for Budenholzer, who the Bucks fired after the 2022-23 season. Durant will not travel with the team to Milwaukee as he’s scheduled for an MRI on Monday.

The road trip will continue with games Friday, April 4, at Boston and Sunday, April 6, at New York.
