The Washington Commanders finished the 2024 season with the third-ranked rushing offense in the NFL. It was quite the turnaround for the Commanders under new head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

While Washington's rushing offense was statistically one of the NFL's best, what would've happened if you removed sensational rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels from the equation? Daniels led the Commanders with 891 rushing yards, averaging six yards per attempt. Brian Robinson Jr. was Washington's top running back, finishing with 799 rushing yards.

The Commanders had more difficulty running the ball as last season wore on. Sure, some of it could be blamed on the offensive line, but the running backs were also not without fault.

Moving forward, Washington would like to rely less on Daniels running the ball by adding a young back to the rotation of Robinson, Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. All four backs will be free agents in 2026. Fortunately for the Commanders, this is one of the best running back classes in the NFL draft in years. Washington reportedly wants to add a "dynamic" running back capable of playing on every down.

Could former Ohio State star TreVeyon Henderson be that guy?

Washington holds the No. 29 overall pick in next week's 2025 NFL draft, and Henderson is among the running backs who could be selected in the first round. Ashton Jeanty will go inside the top 10, while Omarion Hampton will go somewhere among the top 20 picks.

ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid says to keep an eye on Henderson to the Commanders.

"This is a stacked running back class, really the best one since 2017," Reid said Sunday on ESPN's SportsCenter. "Some early names to keep an eye on, especially in the early rounds, the first one is TreVeyon Henderson to the Washington Commanders. The Commanders have Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler in the backfield right now. Both of those guys are in the final year of their contracts. So, Henderson is one name I think they're going to be really interested in. It would not surprise me if he's that third running back that goes in the first round.....so keep an eye on him at No. 29 overall."

From @SportsCenter: This years RB class is the deepest group since 2017. With @HannahStormESPN, a few of my favorite team fits and where they could be picked.

While Reid or anyone else knows what Washington general manager Adam Peters will do, it's clear that Henderson is a player who would be an excellent fit. Not only can Henderson break long runs, he can help in the passing game. Most importantly, have you seen him in pass protection? You can bet Peters and Washington's coaching staff had some fun watching Henderson in pass protection.

Will the Commanders draft a running back in the first round? Peters will draft the best available player on Washington's board. If that's a running back, that will be the pick.
