What does ESPN consider the under-the-radar free agency move for the Jacksonville Jaguars?
In ESPN's recent post-free agency power rankings, the beat writers for each respective team selected one under-the-radar move. For the Jaguars, Michael DiRocco chose the team's decision to sign free agent quarterback Nick Mullens.
"Mullens spent the past three seasons in Minnesota under coach Kevin O'Connell, who is part of the Sean McVay coaching tree just like new Jaguars coach Liam Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski," wrote DiRocco. "Coen's offense should be similar to Minnesota's, so Mullens will offer Trevor Lawrence another tutor."
With only Trevor Lawrence and John Wolford on the roster at quarterback prior to free agency starting, depth and, ideally, finding an experienced backup option at the position were going to be on GM James Gladstone's to-do list.
Mullens signed a two-year deal worth $6.5 million in total, including incentives, with $3 million guaranteed to join the Jaguars.
Mullens went undrafted in 2017 and has played with San Francisco and Cleveland. For his career, he's completed 66% of his passes at 8.0 yards per attempt with 34 touchdowns to 31 interceptions, according to PFF.
But perhaps more importantly, as DiRocco notes, Mullen's familiarity with Liam Coen's offense can be quite valuable for Trevor Lawrence as he learns the new scheme.
Mullens previously worked with current Jaguars' offensive coordinator Grant Udinski in Minnesota, and Kevin O'Connell's offense is going to have overlap with Coen's, with both coaches having spent time with the LA Rams as the offensive coordinator at various times under Sean McVay.
"Without a doubt that familiarity plays a major role, and it was a part of why we sort of tilted in favor of some players over another," Gladstone said. "Because at the same time, while those players on their own have familiarity, it also allows another voice, another player in the room with everybody else of their position group, to be able to sort of bring to life some nuances outside of just a position coach, a coordinator, the head coach, making mention of different elements that come along with this system."
