"The Rockets and Magic have finalized a deal to send Tracy McGrady to Houston for Steve Francis, ESPN Jim Gray reports.

The deal cleared the hurdle of Tuesday's expansion draft, in which the Charlotte Bobcats selected none of the names involved in the multi-player trade.

The trade, however, still cannot be made official until at least July 1 because Francis is considered a "base-year" player. Unless Francis is being traded to a team under the salary cap, the Rockets cannot complete a trade involving him until his "base year" player status expires."

Jim Gray is insistent that it's done. However, doesn't someone in the league, an "unamed source," usually verify something like this? :)

they wont say anything about until the deal can be done on the first of july. if they were to say something then it would be saying that the deal was done agianst the rule of the cba.

The deal cant happen till the 14th of July. You cant make trades between the 1st and 13th.

Jim Gray is the ONLY person saying it will for sure happen. Every other media outlet says there has been a "snag"

i maybe wrong but i believe trades can happen before that point but you cant sign free agents. so once july 1 and the byc happens then this trade can go down.

I posted this in another thread:

89. What is the July Moratorium?
It is a period during the month of July in which teams may not sign most free agents or make trades. Free agents become free on July 1, but the salary cap is not set until the audit report is completed later in the month. Teams and players must wait for the salary cap to be set before trades and most free agent signings can commence. Teams may negotiate with free agents beginning July 1, and may even agree to terms, but they have to wait until the moratorium ends before signing a contract.

I thought the same thing as you, but stumbled accross this while looking for something else.

Pretty funny how every media outlet is saying it cant happen until the 1st. It doesn't really matter though, like the JK trade that was leaked in June, but wasn't formally completed until July 15th. However, if it were REALLY ready to go, it would have been announced by the teams by now.

Yes. Deals are often announced before they can be formally finalized.
