D-Backs acquire lefty Davis from Brewers
11/25/2006 01:05:59

Looking to bolster their rotation, the Diamondbacks on Saturday acquired left-hander Doug Davis in a six-player trade that sent catcher Johnny Estrada to the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Diamondbacks also received young left-hander Dana Eveland and outfielder Dave Krynzel in exchange for Estrada and right-handers Claudio Vargas and Greg Aquino.

In Davis, the Diamondbacks are getting a finesse left-hander who has exceeded the 200-inning threshold each of the past three seasons but whose ERA swelled more than a run in 2006.

After posting ERAs of 3.39 and 3.84 in 2004 and 2005, Davis had a 4.91 ERA last season as his walk rate and hit rate rose.

Davis is arbitration eligible for 2007 and can become a free agent after next season.

Estrada was productive in his only season with the Diamondbacks, hitting .302 with 11 homers and 71 RBIs. But he was due a raise in arbitration, the club considers prospect Miguel Montero big-league ready, and Estrada didn’t click with the coaching staff and some teammates.

Vargas, whom the Diamondbacks claimed off waivers during the 2005 season, was wildly inconsistent from start to start last season, in which he had a 4.83 ERA in 31 games (30 starts).

At first glance I like this trade. I'm very happy Estrada went to Milwaukee so he can act like a brat their when he becomes unhappy after the first game. Very happy Byrnes didn't deal him to where he wanted to go- Philly (also means no Burrell).

Also like it because Claudio Vargas sucks and was a waiver wire pickup anyways and Aquino for some reason or another hasn't panned out (although he's a very intruiging talent).

Not sure what this writers talking about. He says Davis is a finesse pitcher but I'm 99% sure he has a big time fastball and is a strikeout pitcher. I know his strikeouts are always up there. I may be wrong though. I think Davis is a good pickup although he is inconsistent. Another good move by Byrnes IMO

I wonder which teamates Estrada didn't like?????

I like this trade for the Dbacks. Though I am a bit surprised they had to give up 3 players to get 3. I would've thought Estrada's near All Star status would've yielded a bit more.

I don't think I've seen Davis pitch, but at least this gets us a SP lefty w/ out costing an arm and a leg. If he can get his ERA under 4, I'd call this trade a major success.

Eveland is a young (23) SP lefty, hopefully Byrnes has seen something in him that the Dbacks can develop. Krynzel seems to be a OF prospect, not sure why they need another one of those, but I suppose its trade filler or perhaps insurance.

I'm OK with this... I would have liked to get Capuano back, but Oh well. Aquino and Vargas are both all potential and just not gelling here. Maybe elsewhere, maybe not. I also would have thought Estrada was worth something more, but maybe his kvetching openly about the teams he's on has lowered his value a bit. At least we can rest assured we won't be looking at Pat Burrell's butt.

Well, at this point Chris Snyder is our starting catcher, unless Miggy Montero knocks him aside. Should be interesting, and I'm fine with it. We aren't winning anything big in 2007 -- heck, I'll be delighted if we move out of disgustingly mediocre. I figure 2007, 2008 are for Byrnes to craft his own team.

Dave Krynzel is interesting..... the guy is fast as hell and has an absolute cannon for an arm. His offense leaves a bit to be desired.

Overall I thought we could have gotten a little more. Davis is 31 and has never been anything better than a .500 pitcher

Its early but my first impression is that its a solid deal. Doug Davis has been a quality guy for a couple of seasons even though he really slipped last year. At worst, he's a decent back of the rotation guy. If he can regain his 2004 and 2005 form, he is a very solid #3 starter. I haven't been able to track down his full contract status yet, but he only made $3.2M last year. It looks like he's arbitration eligible but he won't break the bank.

I'm not too thrilled with giving up Aquino as we need all the bullpen arms we can get, but he certainly isn't irreplacable. We certainly will need to acquire a reliever or two either through trade or free agency, the bullpen is still a mess.

I don't know a whole lot about Dana Eveland, but it looks like he tore through the PCL last year, he'll probably get a couple looks in spring training. He was ranked the #7 prospect in a pretty good Brewers system by BA last season. As for Krynzel, he was a first rounder way back in 2000, and didn't do too well in AAA last season. Sounds like filler to me.

I LOVE this deal for Arizona.

Davis, Webby and Hernandez give the D-Backs three real inning eaters, and if they can get Wolf, they'll have a very, VERY respectable rotation heading in to next season.

I'm also high on Krynzel. Guy's great defensively and fast as hell. His plate discipline isn't something that can't be worked on.

GOOD deal for Arizona.. REAL good..

Oh and Johnny? Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

I saw Eveland pitch against the Sidewinders and he looks to be a solid young arm but i think that Krynzel like you said is filler. At 25 with poor offensive statistics he is far from a prospect as some people have called him. Think former Diamondbacks farmhand Josh Kroger. I think that this isn't a great trade seeing as earlier Estrada was thought to be enough himself to get Pat Burrell and instead got a project prospect pitcher and a average or below average Left handed starter.

Innings eaters are great but if two of the three are giving up upwards of 5 runs a game who cares if they can last til the seventh or eighth inning?

This trade provides the Dbacks an opportunity to make some spin-off deals....

I envision Krynzel being packaged along with a Minor League pitcher to acquire a LH relief specialist since the Dbacks have a surplus of OFs.... If the Dbacks are out of contention in Aug, pleaee dont be surprised to see Doug Davis gone at the trading deadline netting some prospects in return because several teams wouldnt mind a rent-a-pitcher who's arbitration eligible and wouldnt command much of an expensive contract.....

Aquino became expendable with the emergence of Tony Pena and the Dbacks have a lot of confidence instilled in Valverde as closer... I am wondering if they are actively shopping Jorge Julio since he might have decent redeemable value.....

Vargas was too erratic and was a fluke.. I dont see him replicating his newfound success w/the Brewers.....

I do echo good riddance w/Estrada...Glad he didnt end up with the Giants which was rumored later in the season since it would have been dreadful facing him soo many times and he would be in revenge mode......

I dont necessarily believe this trade would rule out any more signings of a back-end starter in the rotation... No way would they have either E. Gonzalez as their 4/5 starters respectively and too premature to move-up anyone else at the moment.... Or perhaps they'll give Juan Cruz another opportunity since he proved he has the big league stuff, but just needs to mentality/confidence to equal it......

Dbacks traded a #4 or 5 righty for a #4 or 5 lefty. That's OK but they still need a legit #2 starter and a power bat and now they have one less chip (Estrada) to get it done.

The way I read the FSN article, it sound s like Byrnes is content with Webb, Hernandez, and Davis at the top of the rotaion and letting young minor league pitchers round out the bottom half. I hope he has a plan to acquire two more veteran SP's and maybe use Davis as a trade chip to get them.

Krynzel is also out of minor league options, so its either the majors or waivers for him (although I don't think anybody would claim him unless he tore through spring training). A lot have described him as just oozing with tools but can't seem to put them together. Once highly touted AAA outfielder that is out of options and all the tools but no toolbox? I hope I'm wrong but that sounds a lot like a Luis Terrero type. Hopefully Krynzel has his head screwed on a lot better than Terrero's was.

The difference is that Terrero could hit in Triple-a and Krynzel couldn't.

Thanks Espo, great blog!

For those who didn't read it, here's some excellent info regarding Doug Davis-

For the next exercise in numbers, wear your GM hat and choose one of these two pitchers to work in your rotation next season based on their last three seasons:

Pitcher A: LH, 103 ST, 34-34, 3 CG, 633.1 IP, 274 BB, 533 K, 4.04 ERA, .249 OBA, 63 Quality Starts.

Pitcher B: LH, 103 ST, 41-34, 0 CG, 662.1 IP, 269 BB, 485 K, 4.05 ERA, .247 OBA, 57 Quality Starts.

Pitcher A would be Doug Davis, Pitcher B is Barry Zito. Pretty crazy

More upside on this trade is that it gives us 3 pitchers who can eat innings (Webb, Livan, Davis). This will help our bullpen tons, pitchers like this are very valuable

I couldn't believe that Zito doesn't have a complete game in the last three years.

And Arizona got his equal, in some categories BETTER, for a guy who didn't want to be here anyway.

Slam this trade all you want, Arizona made out just fine.

Interesting article regarding the Davis/Estrada trade. No new news but worth reading

MILWAUKEE -- Looking for an offensive upgrade at catcher and unable to keep pace with the free agent spending frenzy, the Brewers swung a six-player trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday and added three players likely to play major roles with the big-league club.

Milwaukee received former All-Star catcher Johnny Estrada, right-handed starter Claudio Vargas and right-handed reliever Greg Aquino for steady left-handed starter Doug Davis and a pair of prospects, lefty Dana Eveland and outfielder David Krynzel.
"I look at this as a real good baseball trade, because it seems to help both teams," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "They needed some left-handed pitching and we needed a catcher. Once it became clear that we would be able to get Vargas and Aquino in the deal, it made a lot of sense to pursue it."

The centerpiece of the trade from Milwaukee's perspective is the 30-year-old Estrada, who has batted better than .300 with at least 70 RBIs in two of his three seasons as a starting catcher, first with Atlanta and then Arizona.

Estrada will bump 37-year-old Damian Miller, who battled a myriad of injuries in 2006, to a reserve role. Miller exercised a player option and will be in the final year of his contract in 2007. The Brewers likely will keep Mike Rivera and newly-acquired JD Closser for depth at Triple-A.
"I'm excited. It's an opportunity for me and I'm looking forward to helping turn them into a winning team," Estrada said. "It's exciting to be a part of building a winner."

Vargas, 28, was 12-10 with a 4.83 ERA for the D-backs last season and established career bests in wins (12), starts (30), innings (167 2/3) and strikeouts (123). He is three years younger but not as established as Davis, who made at least 34 starts and pitched at least 200 innings in each of the last three full seasons in Milwaukee.

Aquino will turn 29 in January and gives the Brewers another late-inning option in front of closer Francisco Cordero. Originally signed by the D-backs as a 16-year-old shortstop in 1995, Aquino has a 4.93 ERA in 111 relief appearances over the last three seasons. He served as Arizona's closer during the second half of that club's 2004 campaign.
"You can never have too much pitching," Melvin said. "I think we found that out last year."

Estrada and Vargas are eligible for salary arbitration and Aquino fell just short, according to Melvin. Milwaukee will have control of Estrada and Vargas for at least the next two seasons, and Aquino for the next four.
Davis is also eligible for arbitration and will be a free agent after the 2007 season. He was seeking a three-year contract extension from the Brewers, who benefited from the two-year contract extension they gave him in July 2004.
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/hot_stove/y2006/index.jsp

"I'm going to miss Milwaukee, but I'm definitely happy about the opportunity," said Davis, who has a home in the Phoenix area and was out of town on a fishing trip. "It will be nice to stay home during the season, and from what I know, [the D-backs] have a real good team and I'm hoping to help them out. I don't really know any of the coaches there, so I'm going to have to put on a happy face and just adjust as best I can."
Davis had already received a call from Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes and is still hoping for that multi-year contract.
"He didn't say much about it -- just, 'We'll talk,'" Davis said. "I'm hoping it will happen. I'd like to stay."
Melvin said it was tough to let Davis go. D-backs right-handed workhorse Livan Hernandez is the only Major Leaguer to make more starts than Davis over the last three seasons.
"We just weren't sure where the process was going to go [with Davis' contract]," Melvin said. "I like Doug a lot. He had a lot of success for us after we brought him in here."

Arizona also received a pair of players who may benefit from a change of scenery. Eveland is a promising left-hander and just turned 23, but he struggled in 2006 after a promotion to Milwaukee. He went 0-3 with an 8.13 ERA in nine games, including five starts as one of several replacements for injured right-handers Ben Sheets and Tomo Ohka. Eveland went 6-5 with a 2.74 ERA in 20 games for Triple-A Nashville.
Krynzel, 25, was Milwaukee's No. 1 draft choice in the 2000 First-Year Player Draft and is a fabulous defensive player, but he fell out of favor because his ongoing offensive inconsistency and an incident last winter in which he failed to notify the club of a serious injury suffered in a motorcycle crash. Krynzel eventually fessed up, underwent surgery to fix a broken collarbone and hit .231 at Nashville with a .314 on-base percentage. He was passed on the organizational depth chart by Tony Gwynn Jr.
