Vanderbilt baseball has 11 former players on 2025 MLB opening day rosters or the injured list, tied for the most among any SEC school.
Those players include MLB veterans like Sonny Gray, the Cardinals' opening day starting pitcher who is in his 13th season in the major leagues, as well as younger players like 2021 All-Americans Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter.
Those 11 players are tied with Florida for the most in the SEC, while LSU and Mississippi State are next with nine.
Seventeen different players who finished their college careers with the Commodores appeared in MLB in 2024.
Rocker was named MLB Pipeline's No. 44 prospect entering the 2025 season. He was the 10th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft by the New York Mets but did not sign due to concerns about his health. He was later selected third overall by the Texas Rangers in the 2022 MLB Draft. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 but returned midseason in 2024 and earned a call-up, where had a 3.86 ERA in three starts. Both he and Jack Leiter, the second overall pick in 2021, made the Rangers' opening day rotation.
At least one Vanderbilt player has made the major leagues from every roster of the Tim Corbin era through 2021. While no one from the 2022 roster has made the majors yet, players like Enrique Bradfield Jr., Dominic Keegan and Spencer Jones are still working their way through the minors.
