Ex-Ariz. Cardinal Simon Shanks is killed

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHOENIX --
Former Arizona Cardinals linebacker Simon Shanks was fatally shot outside his home while his wife and children fled unharmed from three assailants by jumping out a back window, police said.

Shanks, who played for the Cardinals in 1995, was shot Thursday night by one of three men who came to his home, Detective Tony Morales said. He died hours later at Good Samaritan Hospital. A second man working on a car with the 34-year-old Shanks was shot in the neck and is hospitalized.

Shanks' wife, Yolanda Yvette Shanks, and the children escaped when the men entered the house, Morales said. Investigators are trying to identify the men.

They also were trying to find a friend of Shanks known as "Frenchie." He was driving the Shanks' car that day and apparently fled from the home in the car before police arrived. Morales said he may have been shot. There's also evidence someone in the home fired back at the assailants.

Shanks played at East Tennessee and Coahoma (Okla.) Junior College. He led the Cardinals' special teams in tackles with 27 in his lone season with Arizona.

Wow, I talked to the guyseveral times when I was a High Schooler, skipping School to watch the Cardinals Training Camp. He confessed hate for the Cowboys and talked about how he would love to injure a Cowboy after a Kid asked him to sign a Cowboys poster. I thaought that was cool. To bad RIP

I like tough football players and hard hits, but not guys who intentionally go out to hurt other players. Injuries happen often enough - we don't need loose cannons out there trying to injure people.

Physical Game

When I played Pop warner I was given a sticker the color of this weeks opponent to focus my hate on to before bed - by the head coach.

Everyone in the game knows that the other guys are trying to hurt them. Of coarse no-one wants to cripple or kill - but a concussion, broken limb or other - thats part of the game - and I believe most players of this game (at all levels) are proud when they ring someones bell.

I know I'll get blasted for this by all the high and mighties - that my thoughts are "bad" - that most players of football aren't out there to hurt each other - only a few bad seeds.

Just a difference of opinion in NFL fans I guess - I just find it funny that a few on here allways have to pipe up with - it's a good clean game with good clean people and nobody is trying to hurt anyone - and if you think they are trying to hurt - well shame on you...

Who is the poll guy?? Ahh - I am awake - let me see if I can figure this poll thing out.

We're not saying it doesn't happen but what started all of this was someone thinking it was cool for a player to tell a kid "I would love to injure a Cowboy" after he was asked to sign a Cowboys poster.

No doubt it happens, especially in the heat of battle, but there's no need for players to tell kids stuff like that. He could have been more professional.

Context is a tricky thing

I really can't condemn the man for his reaction - if someone asked me to sign a bitter enemies portriate with a smile - and hugs and kisses, I would be a bit offended - to say the least. Allthough I guess that is a big part of the problem - not being there in the first place to understand the context of the situation; age of the child - mood , variety of factors that could make what he said about injuring a cowboy absulutely OK.

This leads me into the poll I started. Here is where I got into laying some ground lines - but it seemed almost un-fair - I don't see how anyone else could not agree with the following. And in these definitions it defines player - Z wanting to injure player X - in each and every contact.

correct way to play football:

I am going to hit player-x (who may or may not have the ball) so hard the SOB will never get up again. Not really wanting to kill him but visualizing it - leading into the tackle with all the force and power my body can deliver. GOAL Desired - to get the player off his feet or out of my way in the most quick and painfull way possible - not focusing on any extremeties in particular except possibly the ball to free it from him.

Bad way to play football:

Hit player X - I focus on his shoddy right knee and lead into it with my helmet preferably on a turnover when most attention is diverted ellsewhere (even player-x's) hoping to end or shorten his carrier.

Is this not pretty common belief of every NFL fan?

ahh - look a damn novel.

Sure they are, but that's a big difference--that's hurting them, not injuring them I don't think many want to injure another player.

I don't think your thoughts are bad, just wrong.

May he pick his balls up after being hit too hard and become a rodeo clown.

I hope God:rockon: , if HE even exists, has better things to do then come to the rescue of some faker and his friend.
