MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (Sports Network) - Barret Robbins (news), a former Pro Bowl center with the Oakland Raiders (news), was shot several times Saturday night during an altercation with police at a South Beach office.
Robbins was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. However, an update on the former lineman was not yet immediately known as of Sunday.
According to Miami Beach police, Robbins was confronted by a detective investigating a burglary report in a building that is also home to a nightclub, jewelry store and a gym.
Bobby Hernandez, a police spokesman, said that Robbins and the detective had what was termed a "violent struggle."
Detective Mike Muley, who shot Robbins several times in the torso, sustained minor head injuries during the scuffle. He was treated at the hospital and later released.
Hernandez added that Robbins has not yet been charged in the case because authorities were unable to interview him.
The 31-year old Robbins made headlines prior to the Raiders' appearance in the 2003 Super Bowl when he went AWOL the day before the game and was later deactivated.
Robbins, a nine-year pro, started 105 games as the anchor for the offensive line and was named to his first Pro Bowl following the 2002 season.
But the often-troubled player was released by Oakland in July, a week after he along with two other players were fined for testing positive for the steroid THG.
This was not Robbins first run in with law. Back in December, he was arrested in San Francisco for hitting a security guard at a night club.
