With the all but envitable release of Antrel Rolle around the corner, I was thinking about the same scenario playing out after the season with our QB. With a big bonus on the horizon, Leinart must prove he is "the guy" or most likely will be in another uni come 2011.

What kind of stats do you guys think Matt must have to get an extention or avoid his release?

Fire away, I'm very interested in your thoughts.

Here's mine:

3,500 passing yds
22 TDs
15 Int

If Matt sustains a 1.5:1 TD:Int ratio, I think he'll be in a good spot. This could be 18/12 or 24/16. We could really transition into a run-heavy O and have Matt put up the 18/12 with 3200 yards and we'll get our wins and another NFC West title. If Matt is a 1:1 or worse, he's gone....

How about these numbers:

Games played: 16
Pass yards: 3600
Percent comp: 63%
TD's: 21
INT's: 12
QB rating: 89%

These are J. Flacco's numbers. Matt should compare favorably to these....

Two things have to happen:

1. The winning continues with ML at the helm.

2. ML is willing to reach a reasonable deal moving forward.

It's as simple as that.

Here's some more numbers:

Rushing yards: 1350
TD's: 12

These, of course, would be Well's numbers.

I don't know honestly because a lot will depend on how it plays out.

He could start out awful and come on strong and end up with pretty average numbers and still convince the team to take a chance on him.

I think your numbers are reasonable but I think you might be a bit light on the interceptions.

There's a good chance he'll throw more than 15 as he tends to toss them in bunches.

You might also be a tad light on TD's, I'd guess something like this.

27 TD's

18 INT

Yardage about 3800 IMO.

I don't think that retaining Matt after next year will have nearly so much to do with stats, as with Winning. If Matt is able to operate the offense like Whiz will want it to operate, (bearing in mind that Whiz is pretty good to tailoring his offense to fit the players he has), AND considering we shore up our defense some this off season, (we already have a great start with the hiring of Donnie Henderson as DB Coach), then we should still play at or above the 500 mark in the W-L column. That should still have us be the team to beat in the division, and put us into the playoffs. THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED SUCCESS ENOUGH TO BUILD AROUND HIM, ESCALATOR OR NO).

Just from a stats stand point I'd be happy if he can end the year with a QB rating of 90+.

I expect Leinart to win the division and get us back into the playoffs. As far as numbers go. 3500yds, 22tds with about 10ints.

So...

if the Cardinals beat the 15-3 Colts to win the Super Bowl, cut Leinart?

:p

Couldn't happen.

In case you didn't notice the numbers I put up were Eli Manning's from the season the Giants beat the 18-0 Patriots in the Super Bowl. :D

This. I think that especially the 16 starts are important. Matt needs to show his team mates that he can play through some pain and discomfort. Get knocked down seven times, stand up eight. Really, really important.

Also, I think that it's important that Matt averages over 7.0 yards per attempt. Big number that's going to show people that he's not just checking down.

Is it fair to expect Matt Leinart to "win" 9 or 10 games with the team that he's going to be given? Yes, the offensive pieces are (mostly) in place (remember that we have a gaping hole right now where the offensive left tackle should be), but the defense could feature as many as four new starters (replacements for Rolle, Dansby, Robinson, and Okeafor). At least a couple of those will feature rookies who probably aren't ready to play.

I think that Matt is going to have to show fans that he can win a few games, but if this defense regresses to 2008 levels (or worse), I don't know if we can hang losses that are 45-28 on Matt. If the offense averages 23 points per game, I think that we should be pretty happy.

Do you really expect Matt to manage 23 points a game? That's exactly what Kurt managed with this team just last season. I don't care who the RB's or WR's are. Expecting him to come in and not have the offense not fall off some is expecting a little much IMO.

Pittsburgh, Dallas, Miami, and Atlanta all averaged between 23.0 and 22.5 ppg last season. Do I expect Matt Leinart in year 5 to perform as well as Matt Ryan in year 2? Yes. Yes I do.

22 ppg is the league average. I expect Matt Leinart to lead an above-average offense, because the offense has above-average personnel.

I know that we're all involved in Kurt Warner hagiography right now, but Warner wasn't as good last year as he was the year before. In 2008, the offense averaged 26.7 ppg. That was out of hand. Whether people want to admit it or not, Warner did a lot more game management this season.
