The NFL is considering getting rid of them altogether. It would take some getting used to but I kind of like this proposed idea:

"Basically, under this proposal, you'd get seven points for a touchdown unless you decide you want an eighth point. If you go for the eighth point and fail, you'd only get six points for the score."

I don't like it because I think one of the endearments to a sport are the aspects of the game which have been a part of its history and where does one stop then changing the game. This is not a question of safety and therefore should be left alone because every so often that place kicker does do something dumb like miss a extra point... and you know what, we have Bethel :)

I say Roger Goodell is going to go down as one of the worst stewards of the game of all time, if not the worst.

The guy is ruining the game, and doing so with new age business practices, you know the ones that are destined to fail long term and drive a business into the ground.

Seriously, the guy changes something about the game EVERY YEAR. EVERY YEAR. He cannot leave well enough alone, and in many cases changes things just for the sake of saying he changed something, anything.

So many changes over the last 5 years, on so many rules, and violations that the players, coaches, refs, and fans don't know what is legal or illegal. And a lot of what is illegal is a joke. An absolute joke. Look no further than the Saints winning over the Niners in the regular season to see what the man has done to the game.

Now onto the extra point. It is PART OF THE GAME! Just like kickoffs are a part of the game. Just how vicious hitting used to be part of the game, and self-responsibility as a player used to be part of the game. How running the ball used to be part of the game. How good defense used to be celebrated and not alienated.

Extra points. You have to snap it, catch it, hold it, and kick it. As an Arizona Cardinals fan, over the last 10 years, I have seen at least 4 to 5 Cardinals games that were decided by a missed extra point.

The Saints failed to get in the playoffs because of a missed extra point about 10 years ago.

This is ridiculous. Goodell won't be happy till he has a passing skeleton drill for a game.

Just stupid. Fixing what isn't broken.

Get rid of kickoffs as well and there would be no need for kickers at all :)

But, I don't think the idea is all bad. I like the option if the extra point play as long as it isn't kicking it but running a play from scrimmage to make.

I can't blame Goodell for anything that happens. He is probably a figurehead mouthpiece. These would seem to be committee decisions.

If they are going to eliminate the extra point kick then I say every team must go for a 2 point conversion. 6 for a TD and 2 for the conversion. No one is ever going to go for the extra point unless they need the point just as they do now going for 2 instead of kicking it. No coach in their right mind is going to take a point off the board just to get one more and potentially lose a point in the process.

I personally would prefer they just leave it alone. If they want to make it more entertaining make it a 30 yd kick. You can either go for 2 from the two yard line or kick it from the 23 yd line making it a 30 yd kick and creating a higher potential of it being blocked or missed.

Then the committee is out of order, this whole damn place is out of order!

My bad kick it from the 13 yd line making it a 30 yd kick.

+1.

Neil Rackers would be sweating kiddie pools in his shoes.

Or, steal the rule from rugby that you have to kick from the position you scored.

For example, if you score in the back corner of the end zone, you have to kick from 3 yards from that sideline so that the posts look like this:

Roger, Rodger.

While you're at it I have some more (stupid ) ideas for you.

1. Eliminate punts. Can you imagine the increase of scoring?

2. Make teams pass 75% of their plays. Failing to do so would award the opposing team the ball on the 2 yard line. So with 4 downs a team would be reqired to pass it 3 times.

3. Expand the season to 48 weeks with a bye week every 12 games. In the summer months the league can move their games to the southern hemisphere.

4. Add 32 more teams including Australia, New Zealand, South America Europe and Canada. Oh! To create natural rivalries you could add teams in Iraq and Iran and North Korea!

5. Expand the playoffs to include all 64 teams....just like the NCAA!

6. Hold the "Goodell Bowl" ( just another idea) in the North Pole every 4th year.

7. And finally, award every team a trophy for their participation.

I understand changing for the sake of safety, but enough is enough. The extra point is part of the game and it should be left alone. It's one of those plays that is taken for granted but when missed sometimes changes the whole strategy of the game.

Mr. Goodell, you need to find a hobbie.

It is a waste...XFL had it right. That and the camera on the wire which the NFL currently uses.

Keep the current system!

I watched the Lion-Philly game this past season where neither team attempted an extra point because of the lousy field conditions. The teams always went for two points. Eliminating the extra point would have eliminated that aspect of the game because it would have 'given' the teams the point.

Just MOVE IT BACK and make it a 35 yarder. Goddell wants to take the foot out of football.

This guy needs to chill; too much tinkering.

"If it ain't broke...."

Exactly.

I don't see what is wrong with the current setup.

Apparently "The commissioner said the point after has become too automatic with 99.1% of all attempts made."

If they are concerned that the PAT is too automatic then move it back don't just make it more automatic.

This - I am sure they have stats on FG % by the yard - find a spot that is 75-80% success rate and go from there.
