For its maiden launch, the Falcon Heavy will be carrying a special payload from Musk’s electric car company: a red Tesla Roadster. Initially, Musk said he intended to put the car into orbit around Mars, but the current plan is to send the car into an elliptical orbit around the sun.

That doesn't mean the tesla is leaving the rocket and will just be floating around in space, does it?

From what I’ve read, it’s not really clear, but I don’t think it does.

I hope someone makes a fuel efficiency projection for this car over the next few thousand years. [emoji38]
I'm assuming the rocket is in orbit and the car is inside the rocket.

I think so, but who knows what Musk is up to. Lol.

Uh yeah, by a long shot.

Think about this the next time you're on a loaded Southwest flight.
With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)---a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel--Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost.

Watch the video:

It shows how it is supposed to work if everything goes to plan. The Tesla will be flying around the sun in orbit.

Looks like 1:45pm Arizona time is the current launch time.
