FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (Aug. 30, 2003) -- In anticipation of the Aug. 31 mandatory cutdown to the 53-man roster, the Atlanta Falcons announced today that 16 players have been waived and one has been suspended by the NFL. The Falcons waived six veterans, six first-year players and four rookies, including two draft choices.

Atlanta waived veterans C Kevin Dogins, DE Ronald Flemons, DE Reggie Grimes, T Robert Hicks, WR MarTay Jenkins and G Michael Moore, first-year players RB Jeff Chaney, LB James Cotton, T Dwayne Morgan, LB Tony Ortiz, QB David Rivers, CB Jason Waters, and rookies S Waine Bacon, WR Jon Olinger, DE Raymond House and LB Recardo Wimbush.

The NFL announced today that LB Keith Newman has been suspended for the first four games of the regular-season for a violation of the NFL policy on anabolic steroids and related substances, effective immediately.

Said Newman, "This was an inadvertent mistake. Evidently I took a supplement of some sort that had a derivative that is against NFL policy. Either way it was my mistake, and I will have to serve my penalty. I would like to apologize to my teammates, the Falcons organization and the Atlanta Falcons fans. I will learn from this. I look forward to returning to the Falcons and helping us continue our promising season."

Said head coach Dan Reeves, "It is an unfortunate situation, but the NFL program serves the best interest of the players and the game."

This puts Kevin Kasper's job in jeopardy.

Martay really screwed up and Rod Graves' judgment has been proven right again.

Why does it put Kasper in jeopardy? Let him go to sign Mar Tay?

I couldn't stand another season with Martay returning kicks and fumbling all the time. He made his bed, now he can sleep in it.

this has to be one of the most boneheaded decisions by a player I have seen of late..we were willing to give the guy like a 2 year deal and an ok (not huge - but something) signing bonus and he would from day one have been our #1 receiver..in fact - he may have altered our draft plans...if he was here..not sure we would have taken a wr in round 1 and 2 if we had martay.

but..martay will probably be claimed by someone - he is a very good gunner on punts and is still a decent kickoff returner.

Yeah he fumbled a few, but he also averaged about 30 yards per return and was an overall elite special teamer.

Cut McAddley.
