Florida A&M baseball is rolling with no signs of slowing down.

On Sunday, the Rattlers completed a weekend sweep over Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent Prairie View A&M on Moore-Kittles Field.

In the first two contests, the Rattlers (15-13, 8-1 in SWAC) run-ruled the Panthers (8-22, 4-5 in SWAC) in seven innings with a 10-0 shutout on Friday, then an 11-1 victory on Saturday. Sunday saw FAMU beat PVAMU 7-2.

The three-game sweep has FAMU atop the SWAC’s standings three weeks into league play.

“We needed this for conference standings,” FAMU head coach Jamey Shouppe said after Sunday’s win. “Very few errors, pitched great, swung the bats pretty good. I’ll take a sweep in conference any day, any time.”

FAMU baseball’s series-opening shutout over PVAMU can be attributed to the Rattlers’ success throughout the weekend.

Friday night starter Caleb Granger, a Preseason All-American and SWAC Pitcher of the Year, struck out seven PVAMU hitters and only allowed two hits out of 23 batters faced. The Rattlers had only three errors throughout the weekend.

“Momentum is huge,” Shouppe explained. “A lot of momentum is based on your Friday night pitcher. And Caleb Granger shut them out Friday. That set the tempo for the weekend.”

Before this weekend’s series victory over PVAMU, the Rattlers’ defense, fourth in the SWAC, led to their early season success.

However, FAMU’s batting got up to speed as it outhit PVAMU 36-14 throughout the weekend. Six of those were homeruns by Justen Crews (two), Josue Figueroa (one), Matthew Perez (two), and Broedy Poppell (one).

“Hitting’s going to catch up,” Shouppe said. “These guys who are playing this season do not have a lot of game experience. They’re catching up. And that’s good to see.”

Perez starred on Saturday.

The freshman infielder from Orlando slammed two homeruns to left field, which led to three RBI.

“The more games we play, we’re getting more comfortable. We’re a young team,” Perez said. “If we stay comfortable and grind out the season, we’ll see improvement.”

Next up for FAMU baseball is a midweek non-conference away game at the Troy Trojans (21-8), ranked 22nd in the nation.

The Rattlers and the Trojans met last Wednesday in Tallahassee, as FAMU squandered a 7-0 lead to falter 10-8.

FAMU and Troy will play at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Riddle-Pace Field. ESPN Plus will broadcast the matinee game.

Troy won its Sun Belt series versus Marshall this weekend.

“We just want to come out with a bang and hopefully win Tuesday at Troy. I think we got them,” Perez said.

Next weekend, FAMU hosts Jackson State (15-10, 3-5 in SWAC) on Moore-Kittles Field for a three-game SWAC series from Friday to Sunday.

Jackson State split its two-game, rain-impacted SWAC series with Grambling State this weekend.

“It’s a big challenge for our team,” Shouppe said of Jackson State. “It’s always fun to match up in a rivalry game, especially when it has SWAC playoff implications, too.”
