Platoon. The most depressing movie I'd ever seen up to that point and still tugs at the heartstrings each time I watch it. It pulls absolutely no punches and was written and directed by a veteran who could say exactly what happened. The DVD has some excellent extras on it.

Even though it's not a war movie per se, I really like Heartbreak Ridge.

I would go with "Braveheart" over all
Saving Private Ryan for modern day WWII
Patton for prior day WWII

Wow! Lots of great choices. I like Spartacus, Breaker Morant, Paths of Glory, The Thin Red Line, Bridge on the River Kwai, Patton, Apocalypse Now.
