Webb is taken care of, and we finally have some offense. My only concern is whether Randy and Gonzo can stay healthy....if they do, the West is ours.

Adding Sexon to the mix adds something that is getting me excited about the season

Rotation after 1-2 could be painful. Not sold on Dessens. Always liked Reynolds but not sure he can do it consistently. If either or both of those guys fail, 3rd place in the West is ours.

I like the lineup though. Looks to have more pop and like you say, if Gonzo can stay healthy (a big IF IMO) he could have a huge year.

If the D'backs fail in the playoffs I am rooting for the Cubs and the Red Sox.

I am not sold on anything this year. I am very worried about our pitching rotation. I would feel very good if we still had Batista. That is going to be the mistake of this season.....not having him. After Webb in the rotation there is no one. The others will have more downs than ups. So far in preseason they really haven't shined that much, but then it is only preseason and more of a preschool workout. Too much changing this and trying that. We may end up closer to the bottom than you think. It's all in that pitching rotation....or I should say lack of it. Well, time tells.

I think that, before the season is 1/3 over, Elmer will be dropped from the rotation ... sent to the Minors (if he can be) ... put on waivers.

Unless he can pitch 5 good innings each game. I'm beginning to have my doubts.

I think there are some guys in the minors that could suprise us by the end of the season, much like Brandon Webb did last year. If Gosling ever got healthy, he would be one of them

My thoughts:

I like our pitching (even though elmo seems to be a wasted trade)
I really like our infield.

The outfield scares me w/ gonzo possible out for awhile. We really need someone from our minor league system to step up and anchor our centerfield position.

I would have to say w/out gonzo - we have one of the worst outfields in baseball....

I think Dessens will surprise. He's not as good as he was in 2002, but not as bad as he was in 2003.

If RJ is healthy and back to form, then we have our 1-2 punch again with him and Webb. After that I think Patterson will be in the mix, I think he's finally ready to produce. Reynolds is solid, but not great.

The offense will be fun to watch. Alomar will be alright, Cintron will continue to produce, Sexson will just be a joy to watch, Gonzo, if healthy, should have his best season since 01, and I think Hillenbrand will be a huge player for us. The key, in my opinion, is Bautista in RF. He's my sleeper pick for a really good year.

At least we night score more this year.

I never pay attention until spring training is over but I'm following the pitching this time. I just have this bad feeling in my gut that our starting pitching is overrated by the fans.

Johnson, Webb, and Dessens didn't exactly post 20 game win seasons last year.

Webb's performance-based contract sure didn't tell me Garagiola has overwhelming faith in Webb this year. Johnson's age and the severity of his knee injury leaves me nervous. And even if Dessens gives us 5 good innings every time out, you know Brenly will try to get more out of him every time and yank him after it's too late to salvage most of the games Elmer pitches.

Some of the new and/or young guys are going to have to perform well if we are to contend.

Why is it year after year that all the young guys on these boards are so optimistic and all the old and worn out bedtimers feel just the opposite? I must be getting real old and I do hit the bed a lot earlier than I use to, but I have been faithful to the core and upbeat about the Colangelos and their teams until this year. The Suns are a mess and only getting worse, and I see little hope for another decade on that end unless something very drastic happens. With the DBacks the teammates learned after last year there is no such thing as a no trade clause, and we are going to sink fast if Webb doesn't perform to all of your expectations. I have no expectations for the youngster, because experience gets you through all the tough times and he needs to go through some to become a steady producing pitcher. Hope everything I've said is wrong, because I sure want some positive entertainment at night, and the Suns were quite disappointing in that department this year and this town needs some help.

Old age means that you have had a lot of years of listening to a team's "spin" about how exciting or competitive the team is going to be this year. After years of hearing that and then watching "dreck" you learn to take it all with a grain of salt.
