The Arizona Cardinals improved to 5-10 on the season with their 27-21 victory over the Eagles in their final game ever in Sun Devil Stadium Saturday afternoon.The Arizona Cardinals kicked off against the Eagles for their final game ever in Sun Devil Stadium Saturday afternoon.


1st Quarter
The Eagles won the toss and elected to receive and the Cardinals defense began the game strong for Arizona. Following a Philadelphia penalty on first down, safety Adrian Wilson sacked Mike McMahon for a loss of four yards. The Eagles offense was unable to gain a first down and punted the ball back to the Cardinals.

Quarterback Josh McCown completed his first two passes of the day to tight end Adam Bergen for a 5 yard gain and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald for another 4 yards. On third and one fullback Obafemi Ayanbadejo was met by defensive end Mike Patterson at the line of scrimmage for no gain. The Cardinals punted the ball back to the Eagles with 11:25 remaining in the first quarter.

McMahon threw two incomplete passes to begin Philly’s next possession but on third and long McMahon hit Reno Mahe with a screen pass for a nine yard gain but Mahe fell a yard short of the first down. The Eagles went for it on fourth down and running back Ryan Moats was met by Adrian Wilson in the backfield for a loss of 1 yard. The Cardinals offense took back over at their 48 yard line.

McCown completed his first pass of the drive to Anquan Boldin for an 8 yard gain. Running back Marcel Shipp followed that completion up with a 5 yard rush and a Cardinals first down. McCown continued to move the ball down the field by completing a 14 yard pass to Bergen. Two plays later Philadelphia was hit with a pass interference penalty to give the Cardinals an automatic first down. However the Cardinals struggled to reach the endzone and settled for a field goal attempt. Kicker Neil Rackers hit a 32 yard field goal to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead with 7:24 left in the first quarter.

The Cardinals defense continued to shine and forced another Philadelphia punt bringing the Cardinals offense back onto the field .

On first down McCown handed the ball off to Shipp who tossed to back to McCown for the flea flicker. McCown launched the ball down the sideline and Larry Fitzgerald caught the pass for a 45 yard gain. The Cardinals were unable to reach another first down and once again settled for a field goal attempt. Rackers connected on another 32 yard attempt to extend the Cardinals lead to 6-0 with 3:34 remaining in the quarter.

Arizona’s defense forced another three and out and the Cardinals offense returned to the field. The Cardinals offense struggled and the Eagles defense forced their own three and out. Philadelphia was able to run one play, a 5 yard rush by Mahe to end the 1st quarter.

2nd Quarter
The Cardinals defense forced another Eagles punt to start the 2nd quarter.

McCown hit Boldin for a 15 yard pick up on first down, followed up by a 7 yard rush by running back J.J. Arrington. Two plays later McCown hit wide receiver Bryant Johnson for a 3 yard gain and the first down. After a false start penalty by right tackle Oliver Ross, the Cardinals were unable to gain another first down and Scott Player punted the ball back to the Eaglesw with 10:35 remaining in the second quarter.

On first down McMahon’s pass intended for L.J. Smith was intercepted by linebacker Karlos Dansby. Dansby returned the pick 11 yards for a touchdown, the second interception return for a touchdown of his career. Rackers connected on the extra point to extend the Cardinals lead to 13-0.

The Eagles were looking to counter and on second down McMahon completed a 26 yard pass to Reggie Brown. Three plays later McMahon was sacked again by Adrian Wilson, for loss of 13 yards. The Cardinals defense was able to hold off the Eagles offensive attack forcing them to settle for a 50 yard field goal attempt. The Eagles faked a kick and Koy Detmer completed a 12 yard pass to Chad Lewis for the first down. After a timeout the McMahon completed a 19 yard pass to Darnerien McCants bringing the Eagles down to the 1 yard line. On the next play McMahon took the ball into his own hands and rushed 1 yard into the endzone for the touchdown. David Akers connected on the extra point to put Philly on the board, trailing the Cardinals 13-7 with 6:38 remaining in the first half.

Following a 27 yard return by Reggie Swinton the Cardinals offense struggled. On third and eleven McCown was sacked by defensive end N.D. Kalu for a loss of 8 yards. McCown fumbled the ball on the play but Oliver Ross recovered the ball for the Cards and Arizona punted the ball back to the Eagles.

The Cardinals defense continued to play well and on first down defensive end Chike Okeafor sacked McMahon for a 7 yard loss. McMahon made up for it and on the next play when he completed a 20 yard pass to McCants, however Chris Lewis was hit with a personal foul on the play, pushing the Eagles back to their 44 yard line. Linebacker Karlos Dansby came up big on the next play tackling Moats for a 3 yard loss. Adrian Wilson disrupted a completion to Billy McMullen on the next play forcing another Eagles punt.

McCown completed a 5 yard pass to Boldin to start the next drive, followed up by 4 yard reception by tight end Eric Edwards. After an Eagles timeout McCown was unable to hit Fitzgerald with a pass forcing the Cardinals to punt the ball away.

The Eagles were hit with a penalty on the punt return and their offense went back to work starting at the 6 yard line. Philadelphia was hit with another penalty on first down for offensive holding and the Eagles offense went back to work from the 8 yard line following the two minute warning.

The Cardinals defense continued to pressure the Eagles offense and on third and one, rookie free agent Tim Bulman tackled Mahe for a one yard loss, forcing an Eagles punt with 19 seconds left in the first half.

McCown completed a 16 yard pass to Ayanbadejo on first down followed up by an incomplete pass to Boldin. The Cardinals took a timeout and decided to attempt a 54 yard field goal. Rackers missed on the attempt and the Eagles offense took over with 3 seconds remaining in the opening half.

McMahon attempted a pass to Lewis deep into the endzone but the pass was incomplete. The Cardinals headed to the lockeroom leading the Eagles 13-7.

3rd Quarter
The Cardinals offense strung some plays together to start the second half. McCown drove the offense 76 yards down the field in 7 plays, culminating in a 25 yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald. Rackers connected on the point after to add to the Cardinals 20-7 lead.

Arizona’s defense continued to excel in the third quarter, forcing another quick three and out, and an Eagles punt.

The Cardinals offense continued to click on their next possession. Ayanbadejo rushed on consecutive carries for 9 yards on the first two downs. On third and one McCown completed a 13 yard pass to Fitzgerald for the first down. Shipp rushed for 5 yards on the next play followed up by a 14 yard run and another Cardinals first down. On the next play McCown was intercepted by cornerback Sheldon Brown and Brown returned the ball 7 yards to the Philadelphia 42 yard line.

Two plays into the drive McMahon was hit hard by Chike Okeafor and Darnell Dockett forcing him to leave the game. Quarterback Koy Detmer entered the game for the Eagles but was unable to gain a first down and the Eagles punted the ball back to the Cardinals with just over 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

McCown and the Cardinals offense continued to make plays, gaining two more first downs before the end of the third quarter.

Cardinals 20 - Eagles 7


4th Quarter
McCown completed his first pass of the fourth quarter to Eric Edwards for a 6 yard gain, followed up by a 11 yard completion to Bryant Johnson. Three plays later McCown hit Bergen with a 15 yard pass for the first down. Two plays later McCown completed a 20 yard touchdown pass to Boldin. Rackers connected on the point after attempt and the Cardinals extended their lead to 27-7 with 11:25 remaining in the contest.

The Eagles struck right back on their next possession. McMahon returned to the game driving the team 58 yards down the field in 3 plays in 1:04 seconds resulting in a 21 yard touchdown reception by McMullen. Akers was successful on the point after attempt and the Eagles closed in on the Cardinals 27-14 lead with 10:21 left in the game.

McCown and the Cards offense returned to the field and on third and eight wide receiver Anquan Boldin made an impressive on handed catch for an 8 yard gain. Boldin fumbled the ball on the reception and Bergen recovered the ball for the Cardinals. Shipp rushed on consecutive carries for another Cardinals first down and two plays later McCown hit Johnson for a 47 yard touchdown reception. However, the play was nullified after an illegal shift penalty. McCown was unable to complete a pass to Boldin on the following play and the Cardinals punted the ball back to the Eagles with 5:10 remaining in the quarter. Player punted the ball down into the Eagles territory and Robert Tate downed the ball at the two yard line.

McMahon completed his first pass to Smith for a 9 yard gain. After an incompletion the Eagles were faced with a 3rd and 1 situation but the Cardinals defense were able to hold off Philly and force the three and out.

Following an exchange of possessions the Cardinals got the ball back just prior to the two minute warning but were not able to reach a first down. Scott Player punted the ball back to the Eagles and the Philadelphia offense took over at the Arizona 49 yard line.

The Eagles strung plays together and worked their way down to the 31 yard line. Five plays into the drive Adrian Wilson was hit with a pass interference penalty bringing the Eagles down to the 1 yard line. Four plays later McMahon kept the ball in his own hands and rushed 1 yard into the endzone. Akers extra point was good and the Eagles closed in on the Cards 27-21 lead.

Philadelphia attempted an onside kick and rookie Eric Green recovered the ball for the Cardinals. Josh McCown took a knee to run the clock down and end the game.
