1st Quarter
The Arizona Cardinals kicked off their second match up of the season against the St. Loius Rams at the Edward Jones Dome Sunday morning. The Rams won the toss and elected to receive to start the game.

The Rams offense, lead by quarterback Marc Bulger were able to gain two first downs on their opening possession, however the Cardinals defense was able to hold the Rams on third and long, forcing a St. Louis punt. Punter Bryan Barker punted the ball into the end zone and the Cardinals offense took over at the 20 yard line.

Kurt Warner opened his return to St. Louis by connecting with wide receiver Anquan Boldin for a gain of 20 yards. Two plays later Warner hit Boldin again for a 5 yard pick up. On third down and seven yards to go, tackle Leonard Davis was hit with a false start penalty, leaving the Cardinals with a third and twelve situation. On the repeat down, Warner was sacked by defensive end Brandon Green for a loss of 7 yards and fumbled the ball. Rams defensive tackle Damione Lewis recovered the ball and the Rams offense took back over at the Cardinals 34 yard line.

The Cardinals defense was able to prevent St. Louis from gaining a first down and the Rams settled for a field goal attempt. Kicker Jeff Wilkins connected on a 47 yard attempt to give the Rams an early 3-0 lead.

Following a holding penalty on the initial kickoff, the Rams re-kicked and kick returner Reggie Swinton returned the ball 30 yards and the Cardinals offense went back to work at the 25 yard line. Warner connected with wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald on first down for a gain of 4 yards. Two plays later Warner found Boldin again for a 15 yard gain followed up by a 11 yard reception by Fitzgerald. Following an illegal use of the hands penalty on the Rams the Cards went back to the run game. Rookie running back J.J. Arrington had two consecutive carries to leave the Cards with a 3rd and one situation. Arrington rushed for 10 yards on third down to keep the offense rolling. The Cards were unable to gain another first down and the field goal unit took the field. Kicker Neil Rackers connected on a 32 yard attempt to tie the game at three with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter.

On the first play of the Rams drive, Cardinals linebacker James Darling tackled Steven Jackson for a loss of 3 yards. Following an incomplete Bulger pass on second down, Cardinals cornerback David Macklin was hit with a pass interference penalty to give the Rams an automatic first down. The Rams were able to get one play off before the end of the quarter.

2nd Quarter
The Rams offense began the second quarter with a false start penalty on second down. On third and two Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson was penalized for unnecessary roughness giving the Rams another automatic first down. On the very next play Bulger connected with Torry Holt for a 22 yard touchdown reception. Wilkins was successful on the point after attempt and the Rams lead 10-3 with 14:07 left in the second quarter.

Swinton returned Wilkins kick 36 yards and Warner and the Cardinals offense took over at the Arizona 41 yard line. On second down running back Marcel Shipp took a left end 19 yards for a first down. Rookie tight end Adam Bergen caught a four yard pass on first down and second year tight end Eric Edwards followed that up with a seven yard reception. On the next play Fitzgerald took an end around 9 yards down to the St. Louis 20 yard line. Three plays later Boldin was charged with an illegal block in the back penalty and the Cards were faced with a first and fourteen situation. However Boldin was able to redeem himself when Warner found Boldin for a 13 yard touchdown reception on third and long. Rackers connected on the extra point to tie the game at 10 with 8:53 remaining in the first half.

On the Rams next possession Bulger was driving the offense down the field when but just after the two minute warning linebacker Orlando Huff hit Steven Jackson forcing a fumble, which was later recovered by defensive tackle Ross Kolodziej. Warner and the Cardinals offense returned to the field with just under two minutes remaining in the first half.

Arizona was unable to reach the end zone however, they drove 60 yards down the field in 9 plays, culminating in a 33 yard field goal by Neil Rackers to put the Cards up 13-10 with less then twenty seconds remaining in the first half.

3rd Quarter
On the first play of the third quarter, Warner hit Boldin for a big 34 yard gain. Two plays later Fitzgerald caught an 11 yard pass for another Cardinals first down. The Rams were hit with a defensive holding penalty two plays later, but the Cards were not able to gain another first down and the field goal unit returned to the field. Rackers connected on a 51 yard attempt to extend the Cardinals lead to 16-10 with 11:09 remaining in the third quarter.

The Rams countered on their next possession and drove 72 yards down the field in 6 plays, capped off by a 46 yard touchdown reception by Isaac Bruce. Wilkins was successful on the point after attempt and St. Louis regained the lead 17-16 with 7:38 left in the third quarter.

Running back J.J. Arrington got the offense started on the right foot by rushing for 5 yards on first down, followed by an 8 yard reception on second down. Following an offensive pass interference call on tight end Adam Bergen, Warner hit Boldin for another 8 yard gain. Two plays later on third and twelve, right tackle Oliver Ross was false started leaving the Cards with a third an seventeen situation. Warner’s pass attempt to wide receiver Reggie Newhouse was incomplete forcing the Cardinals to punt the ball away.

The Rams offense returned to the field and on second down Cardinals safety Adrian Wilson sacked Bulger for a loss of 11 yards. Bulger was injured on the play and quarterback Jamie Martin entered the game with 4:42 left in the third quarter. The Rams were not able to gain a first down and punted the ball back to the Cardinals.

To begin the Cardinals next drive Warner hit Fitzgerald for a 20 yard reception. The two connected on the next play for a 12 yard gain but the Cardinals offense had a difficult time gaining another first down and was forced to punt the ball back to St. Louis to end the third quarter.

Cardinals 16 - Rams 17


4th Quarter
The Cardinals offense started the fourth quarter on the ground with Arrington rushing three yards up the middle. On second down Boldin caught a six yard pass from Warner leaving the Cardinals just inches short of a first down. Warner kept the ball in his own hands on third and one, rushing 1 yard up the middle for the first down. The Cardinals were hit with two false start penalties before gaining an automatic first down due to an illegal use of the hands penalty enforced on the Rams. On second down Arrington rushed for a 15 yard gain, followed up by a 9 yard gain which brought the Cards down to the St. Louis 11 yard line. On the next play Warner connected with tight end Adam Bergen for a 9 yard touchdown reception, the first of Bergen’s career. The Cardinals opted to go for a two point conversion and were successful on the attempt when Warner completed a pass to Boldin in the end zone. The Cardinals regained the lead 24-17 with 8:03 left in the contest.

On second down of the Rams next possession, Adrian Wilson recorded his second sack of the day, but this time sacking Martin for a loss of 4 yards. However, Martin hit Torry Holt for a 37 yard pick up as the Rams entered the Cardinals territory. The Rams continued to work their way down the field and on third and long Holt picked up another first down on a 15 yard completion from Martin. The Cards defense came up big and prevented the Rams from gaining another first down forcing St. Louis to settle for a field goal attempt. Wilkins connected on a 32 yard attempt to narrow in on the Arizona 24-20 lead.

To begin the Cardinals next possession kick returner Reggie Swinton returned Wilkins kickoff 90 yards to bring the Cards down the Rams 5 yard line. On second down Warner found Fitzgerald in the endzone for a 7 yard touchdown reception. Rackers connected on the extra point to extend the Cardinals lead to 31-20 with 3:11 remaining in the game.

On first down, Cardinals rookie linebacker Darryl Blackstock sacked Martin for a loss of 9 yards and forced a fumble. Adrian Wilson recovered the ball at the 15 yard line, and the Cardinals offense took the field with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Prior to the two minute warning defensive tackle Leonard Little was hit with a roughing the passer penalty resulting in an automatic Cardinals first down. On the next play Arrington rushed 7 yards up the middle for a touchdown. Rackers connected on the extra point to add to the Cardinals 38-20 lead with 1:54 remaining in the game.

The Rams struck back when Martin connected with Kevin Curtis on a 26 yard touchdown reception with 35 seconds left in the game. The Rams were successful on a two point conversion when Martin hit Arlen Harris to narrow in on the Cardinals 38-28 lead.

The Rams attempted an onside kick and Rams wide receiver Dane Looker recovered the kick for the Rams and returned it to the St. Louis 48 yard line. The Rams offense took over but were unable to gain a first down before the clock ran out.

Kurt Warner and the Cardinals walked away with the 38-28 victory in Warner’s return to St. Louis.
