-----the Cardinals have made the one move that has been missing in our offensive line since the days of Deuce Lutui. With the signing of Mike Iupati, we now have the guard with 'beast mode' mentality who can impose his will on opposing defensive tackles and open holes for running backs to rumble through. Better yet, (while Lutui was definitely a 'free spirit' who often set about kicking an opponent's butt simply because he felt like it), Iupati is the type of player who enjoys kicking butt in the context of the play call, and the need for opening a hole for a running back to get through because the play calls for it. That type of line play will have the effect of getting other linemen excited about imposing their will also, (just as Lutui did when he went into 'beast mode').

While I am ecstatic with the signing of Iupati, I am somewhat uneasy that for whatever reason, Wisniewski was not signed at center. I don't know if it was simply a money matter, (or that maybe Wiz began to pull back for more dollars after finding out what we spent on Iupati), but regardless, Keim ended up signing AQ Shipley to compete with Sendlein, (or replace him). It may even be that Arians had a lot of say in the matter and influenced the selection of Shipley over Wisniewski. Arians is very familiar with Shipley, having coached him twice before, (with the Steelers, then the Colts). Arguably, Shipley graded out very well during his short five game stint as starting center for the Colts before being benched. He may have been in the dog-house for some reason not known to us here on this board. Or he may have been the equal of Wiz, for about a third the cost. In any event, I have a sneaking suspicion that we have upgraded the Center position from Sendlein, and at the very least, have created some extremely heated competition for him to overcome in order to keep his job, (again for about a third the cost). I have no real fears about the center position, so long as Arians is not complaining about the signing. This may well lead to being able to cut Sendlein and his 4 mil dollar salary, (money that could be used to help sign Orakpo or a running back).

I am very pleased at what the front office has accomplished so far in free agency, as each signing seems to have a very good fit either offensively or defensively. Each one fills a hole that we needed to address, and while some are maybe injury prone, they undoubtedly do not lack in talent. Once again there appears to have been a very carefully crafted plan by Keim to set the roster up for the draft, and it was done quickly, skillfully, and frugally. Hearing newly signed players like Corey Peters describe how Keim explained the fit and purpose for Peters selection, was music to my ears after the continued failings of Rod Graves for years at doing the same job.

We may not yet be finished in this free agent period, and any further signings would be icing on the cake to me.

As an afterthought, I can see our O-line coming out like this: LT, Jared Veldheer, LG, Mike Iupati, C, AQ Shipley, RG, Johnathon Cooper, RT, Bobby Massie. I believe that this is an O-line that we can live with for years to come.

Has Wisniewski even visited at this point? If not than maybe they still plan on bringing him in. Though it is quite possible that he is asking for more money than they are willing to spend.

Put this on another thread from Kent Somers:

Shipley will compete with Lyle Sendlein for the starting center job. It's doubtful that the Cardinals would release Sendlein and count on Shipley starting. Shipley's ability to play guard could make him the swing backup between those two spots. Ted Larsen could also fill that role.

I said it on another thread, signing Iupati pretty much took us out of the Wisniewski market.

Hopefully the comparison to Lutui ends with his style, beast-mode, of play...Don't need another lineman eating himself out of the league.

Our line has a lot of muscle now. This smash mouth thing might just work if we can just get a RB.

Stupid Jack-In-The-Box!
I met Duece Lutui during his Cardinals playing days - Next to him in line at Jack-In-The-Box! He was with another Cards OL (short term guy that I can't remember). They had just gotten done with practice at the Tempe facility. No lie!

I would eat ten of those tacos a day for life.

Not that you wouldn't eat them it's un-American that there are places that don't have Jack-in-the-Box...

I practically lived on Super Tacos for awhile. I'd order them without sauce so they were always freshly made. Yum.

I said it on another thread, signing Iupati pretty much took us out of the Wisniewski market.

I don't know. I think it's a very real possibility (maybe even likely) that they already have offered him a deal, and now he is taking a free agent-tour to see if someone else will offer him more. I just think it makes too much sense that Palmer and Veldheer would have pleaded their case for signing Wisniewski, and at the same told Wisniewski good things about the team and organization. Of course, it also possible they have told the coaching staff to stay away from him.

Mike Jurecki did report six days ago that they were going after both Shipley and Wisniewski. Now, that was obviously before they signed Iupati but I think it's highly unlikely that they suddenly decided to hand out that big of a contract, and so I think that if Jurecki was right they had at that time decided to go after Iupati as well.

By the way, it seems to me that a lot of people have talked for month about the possibility of cutting Sendlein to make some salary cap-room but I haven't seen many talk about doing the same with Ted Larsen. Cutting him would save about 2.2 million on the cap, and I think that they could more or less have both Wisniewski and Shipley at the same cost cap-wise. Probably a bit more but I would still take that scenario in a second.

I don't know about that, Catfish, though I can easily see your point. I just think that Steve Keim has done such a great job setting up the team for the draft, and I think it would be a shame if he was unable to make what I consider to be the last few important moves. Specifically, a center, an edge rusher and maybe a cornerback would in my mind do wonders in terms of giving yourself a lot of flexibility in the draft.

I think Shipley is the center (like it or not), we heard about how much Harold Goodwin and Arians like him there and wanted him. There are no good edge rushers left either--we might as well re-sign Acho as he is no better or worse than what else is there and knows the system and would likely be cheaper.

I thought I would pass along those comments from Pete Carroll:

He was here yesterday," Carroll said. "He is a legitimate starter in the league. He really likes us and we like him. That is a potential thing that could happen. There will be some time before this gets worked out. He's got some visits. There's a little recruiting, that is why I have not been tweeting. We have been recruiting and battling. He is a really solid football player and a smart kid. We will see how it goes.

I haven't seen any of those visits reported. Just maybe the Cardinals are not out of the running.

Gandhi and Zeno-----you both might be right. Now that Orakpo has signed, and it is less looking like AP is a likely signing, it may be that Keim has money to compete for Wisniewski with, and to add a lesser pass rusher. That might be what the problem was all along-----(Pete Carrol).
