Fitz needs Todd Haley's boot!

I still vividly remember a practice during the first week of training camp back in 2008. The Cards recievers were doing this really cool drill where they run around cones set in a rectangle and the reciever coach is firing balls at their feet, over their head (just like DA) and expecting them to catch the ball. During the drill, then offensive coordinator Todd Haley notices that Larry Fitzgerald is screwing around and not paying attention to the rest of the players doing the drill. Haley takes the ball from the receivers coach and screams at Fitzgerald to take his turn in the drill. Haley proceeds to throw the ball as hard as he can at Fitzgerald and makes every attempt to embarass Larry. All Fitz does is catch everything Haley throws and the crowd goes wild. When the drill is done, Haley screams at Fitzgerald "you haven't done a damn thing in this league yet, grow up!"

I think Larry had a healthy fear of Todd Haley and that fear was fuel that helped him get the next level. Now that is gone and so appears to be the drive and focus that made Fitz the next Jerry Rice. There is no doubt that the QB play is bad, but Fitz gave up on that deep ball yesterday that would have been a touchdown. He ran a crappy route on the interception late in the game by allowing Talib to cut his route. He dropped an easy pass that would have resulted in an interception if not for the defensive holding penalty.

Larry is great and I have always defended the guy, but he does seem to be lacking something this year and even last year with the drops. Todd Haley seemed to be the guy who could light the fire under Fitz.

Shhh.... that's heresy around here.

Can't use the excuse that he's still recovering from his knee injury :eek2:

Haley and KURT who would lay into Fitz when he needed it. I think Larry is one of those guys who knows he's talented and gets a little lazy about it unless some one is on him all the time. (That's one of the reasons he ended up at Valley Forge for a year where they instilled in him a lot of "healthy fear".) He needs someone who doesn't care that he's "Larry Fitzgerald star of the Sunday Night Football intro" and isn't afraid to call him out.

Totally agree, Holian.

I see it, too. I don't know what it is, but his play looks a little uninspired. I still love him; it's just different this year.

Just another reason why we need a good OC.

Well, it looks like Jaws was right then. This is what he said this past week:

"The one thing I'm beginning to see seep in is the receivers not finishing their routes," he exclaimed. "Not working as hard as they have to. They're just not getting the football and when it comes their way it's inaccurate, it's at bouncing at their feet, it is high or it's behind them. Receivers begin to lose confidence in the quarterback. These aren't things I'm making up. These are things I look at when I see the tape. The eye in the sky doesn't lie."

Agreed. Larry has been disappointing with his effort this year. Lack of confidence in his QB aside, there is no excuse to start getting lazy with his routes again.

And the dropsies....

I said the day Haley left he would be greatly missed & was laughed at by many. He challenged players to want to be great & added the fire to the coaching staff that this team lacks.

Yeah, just ask Q.

Hey Q responded fine after that incident. Some of the current players need their asses jerked out of the lineup for a few series & shaken out of their comatose state...DD, DRC, CC, Levi, etc. More NFL players need a dose of reality these days & most don't respect their coaches, many need some Old school lovin.

Mike Singletary could come in as an assistant HC if Grimm deservedly gets canned or takes a HC gig. Singletary is a joke in every facet of the game aside from motivating but he and Whiz complement each other perfectly with Singletary playing the motivator and Whiz as the X's and O's guy. I'm extremely surprised the niners are still fighting despite being 2-6.

Just make him stay the hell away from anything aside from motivation or coaching the LBs and it could work.

2-6 in this divison, you still can win it
they are playing Rams in week 9, if they win they are 1 game behind
it's too early to write them off
we are the ones who should write them off, we'll play against them twice

Whiz might be a choice candidate for one of Haley's boots too at this point in time.

If Fitz needs a coach to motivate him and someone in his face to finish off his routes and keep his head in the game etc.. etc..

Then he is hardly even close to the consummate professional we all would like to believe.

I also have seen Fitz apparently pull up early on a route or two. I have also seen Fitz blocking like a fiend, Dashes TD run last week for example. I have also seen Fitz standing next to Whiz during the game, very into what was happening. Yes Fitz struggled with his knee injury so far. Yes he has let the horrible QB play effect him a bit here and there.

Let's not put the weight of this frustrating year on Fitz. Let's not start to eat our own. All of us would love to see Fitz leap 10 feet into the air and grab a scud missle but let's be a bit more realistic.

I love Larry. I mean I LOVE Larry.

But he and Haley had a special relationship. (Mitch and I had a little chat about that.) And I absolutely think Haley motivated Larry. Because he UNDERSTOOD Larry.

It's like Peyton Manning "needs" Tom Moore. Peyton excells because he's got a coach, in Moore, that understands him, his mind, how he plays the game. There's a "what if" thread about our signing Peyton. I'd make sure Moore signed right along with him.

I'm not saying that Haley didn't have a huge impact on Fitz, he obviously did.

I'm just not sure that the lessons he learned from Haley need to be repeated on a daily basis for Fitz to retain that info. Haley got into Fitz's face and challenged him to be the best, that's not something that is typically unlearned.

Got it. THAT I totally agree with. Totally. I was thinking of some specific during-the-game situations.
