Renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium are now officially set to include a new jumbotron and video boards inside Florida State football's iconic stadium.

The university received approval from the Florida Board of Governors on Wednesday to shift $25 million in savings from its $265 million dollar Doak renovation loan into the construction of the jumbotron and video boards.

FSU will partner with Formetco of Duluth, Georgia, to replace 11 ribbon boards that run more than 1,270 feet around the stadium and new jumbotron scoreboards in the north and south end zones. The north end zone will measure 57 feet x 120 feet and the south 35 feet x 75 feet, according to information released from the university.

The additional renovations aren't without controversy, however, as Leon County Commissioner David O'Keefe called for the university to return the $25 million to taxpayers.

After a bitter 9-month battle, Blueprint approved earmarking $20 million in sales taxes for FSU stadium repairs in 2022. O'Keefe wrote to university president Richard McCullough and Blueprint Chairwoman Dianne Williams-Cox on Tuesday to ask for a pause on the fund relocation to discuss returning the money.

"I greatly appreciate the positive impact FSU has always made for our community, and I am excited to continue that together," he wrote to president McCullough. "Returning these funds could be another great way to improve our community together. These tax dollars could be used for other economic development projects in our community."

The Democrat has reached out to Williams-Cox for comment.

In a press release on the project, FSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford said the renovations will improve gameday and Doak's standing as a "world-class stadium."

“These enhancements will not only improve the gameday atmosphere for our passionate fans but also allow us to expand the versatility of the venue,” said Alford. “Whether it’s for FSU Athletics or other special events held at Doak Campbell, these new displays will provide an unmatched high-quality visual experience that meets the demands of a modern, world-class stadium.”

Alford has previously stated his desire to host events such as motocross and concerts at the stadium.

Fans who attended games last season at Doak were aware of the Seminoles' jumbotron issues.

Multiple games featured broken pixels or black spots on the university's endzone screens as fans peered toward the jumbotron's for highlights and score updates.

The additional renovations are not expected to delay the current project completion timeline of July.
