I love football. I played it for 4 brief years in highschool. I couldn't play in pop-warner cause I was a huge kid. I could only play in highschool. While in highschool I played FB, G, DT, and MLB. Mostly MLB and G though.
I have a good idea of why and how things happen out on the field. BUT I have NO idea what is happening in the secondary. I understand Nickel and Dime packages. And different formations but once the ball is snapped I am lost. While playing MLB I would drop back to the middle of the field and decapitate anyone coming across the middle. What the DB's where doing I have no idea?
Anyone want to fill me in or give a good link to how defensive back react once the ball is snapped?

In return I can field some OL questions. I love offensive linemen they do some cool stuff if you watch really close.

It all depends on what DB you are...........

for instance, if you are Tito Paul, you trip over the 40 yd line and have the receiver blow right past you. I fyou are Tommy Knight, you pull a hamstring.

It was perhaps the greatest play fake ever, by a QB playing with a wooden leg. He is still running....

Thank you sir! May I have another!

I started playing Pop Warner in 3rd grade and never knew about o-line blocking scemes untill high school. It's amazing how many complicated ways there are for a bunch of people to push another bunch of people. I remember my junior year when one of our coaches taught our center about crab blocking. He loved it. I played mostly db. When you play man you basically follow the reciever wherever he goes. Not too complicated there. In zone it's the same as the linebackers where you patroll a certain part of the field, except you have to stick to you guy a little better and stay with the deep guy if they flood your zone. Safety you basically cover the deep half of the field you're on. I'm sure there are some complex defensive schemes out there but that's the gist of it.

By the way rugby, what was you're favorite blocking assignments/scheme?

Rugby Muffin...Being a former DB. I can tell you it really depends on the defensive call. Zone or Man defense. Fundamentally CB's are told their first movement is backwards (3 steps)when the ball is snapped. Once the play is recognized, say it's a running play their jobs are similar to LB's you disengage a blocking receiver, or any offensive player & pursue the football. Some defensive schemes are different. Some CB's are required to contain outside plays. Which means they are to run at the shortest angle to the sideline. This means the offensive player must "cut it inside" where all the defensive help should be. Coaches also teach cb's not to watch the QB. The CB's focus in man coverage should be blanketing the receiver, & waiting for the receiver to indicate the anticipated arrival of the football. You hear the terms "jumping the route" or "breaking on the ball" ..insticts & timing allow players to judge the opportune time to interrupt, or intercept passes in the passing game. I've jumped a few routes in my day ;) Safeties are different they are taught to help CB's deep & cover the middle of the field behind the LB"S so it's very important that they keep their eyes on the QB as well as the whole field. Zone coverages , are simply to cover areas of the field, without it appearing to be covered. QB's throw more int's vs Zones because the receiver always appears to be opened, but the deceptive design has someone near everyone running a route
most of the time.
:D hopes this helps a little...man you're making me have flash backs baby!!!!!
