this perfectly highlights the fools gold of Steve Keim

a middle / small market team like the Cardinals NEEDS to draft well to be competitive

but Keim fails at the draft, which puts the team in a position to have to fill holes via free agency or trades

Free agents are expensive relative to drafted players. Traded players -- the good ones like Chan Jones and Hopkins -- are doubly expensive: they were available because the trading team couldnt afford them, so the Cards give them giant $ -- and -- the Cards give up a pick or two that would be an inexpensive contributor.

i earlier called Keim a replacement level GM (i.e. average). This has made me think i was too charitable

This is the fundamental problem with his inability to draft and why I think it will hamper the Cards from stringing together consistently good years.

yes

because usually a team has a good run, resigns key players, gets up against the cap and has to make hard decisions

that happens for the Cardinals faster -- they have one or two good years and have to make hard decisions

This actually shows how close all teams are with drafting. They pretty much all suck. High to low over a 5 or 10 year period is less than 2%.

But successful teams also show to have at least a year of a top 3 quality draft.

Sans Buffalo all the teams without a top 3 quality draft within the last 10 years are not in the playoffs this year.
