Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. said when we recently discussed the idea of adding Porter.

"He is inspirational and well-liked by teammates. He could have some leadership skills. But he is not nearly the player he was. I thought his play was just above average even when he had all those sacks a couple years ago. He played against some bad tackles. But if you are the Cardinals, you have to stop the bleeding. At least he brings in something that helps."

$5.5 mm isn't an extreme salary these days--

clearly better than average

Also-- agents release the dollars, so you can bet it was stated in the most player friendly way imaginable

Its funny, the Cardinals are in a weird place.

One day PFT is giving them snide digs for being under the salary cap floor and the next they get digs for paying too much for a player.

I assume Porter will be part of a rotation -- and for such a player, the money is a bit high. That being said, I also think the extra $1.5mm a year that is the diff between the perceived "right" price and his contract is that cost of sending the message to your locker room that you intend to win.

Excellently put, karma!

.
This is because PFT has an agenda; Florio is a huge tool and hack and hates the Cardinals.

He can suck it...

It's OK if Cards overpaid for Porter

Anyone following the Cardinals closely should know the team's reputation as a cheap franchise is increasingly outdated.

The team plays in a beautiful stadium. It's head coach ranks among the highest-paid in the league. And while several players have gotten away in free agency over recent years, the team has committed tens of millions to keep others.

And if initial reports on Joey Porter's contract hold up -- three years and $17.5 million -- the Cardinals might have overpaid.

If that is the case, good for Arizona.

Cardinals fans should smile when anyone suggests their team paid too much. Consider it another reminder that some things have changed.

I think M.O. is way off base. Here are the real reasons Porter is worth every dime.

1) He has to be accounted for. Which our previous OLB's you couldn't say the same. I follow the Dolphins quite a bit myself being here in Fort Lauderdale and Joey isn't an all world player, but 9 sacks are 9 sacks. When he is on the field you better get him blocked, and even send double teams at him. And this opens up the field for Wilson, Campbell, and Dockett. You won't be able to measure Porters "success" by his numbers alone. You will have to look around the roster.

FINALLY: I am believing that getting our money's worth from Porter, will be of such little concern, that it will hardly register at all among the things on the Cards Richter Scale.

2) I am one who believes quite a bit in a players motivation, and Porter, coming into a system he is familiar with, is going to be in full on eff you mode. The Dolphins brass and fans have been killing this guy at every turn and I guarantee he will come out with a chip on his shoulder to proves he was right about not being needed to come off the field.

3) Our defense is big on rotating players. If we would have drafted a OLB we would then have two players whom in good reason we would have NO IDEA what to expect in Brown and rookie OLB. Especially from a liability perspective. That's not good. This way we can bring along Davis and Brown at their own pace and rotate them into situations that are going to maximize their success.

4) And this is most important to me. We can now address our draft not needing a OLB. With those first 4 picks we can truly go BPA at numerous positions which we all know is the best methodology for landing stars in the draft. Especially with Wiz and Kiem. This alone makes Porter worth every penny IMO.

5) What else were we going to spend the money on?

As a Seahawks fan its kind of bad form to think that you "happy" we signed an aging Porter. I like Whitehurst more then most but my cousin is a diehard Seahawk fan and is apolectic at the offseason so far. You aren't playing for next year. You are doing what Holmgren is doing in Cleveland. You are playing for 2012.

And Porter likely won't be on the team in 2012. So you'll have someone else to worry about at that point ;)

I'll deal with #4 first: This move completely sets up the draft for us. We can do just what AF says, (take the best player available). That, in itself will benefit us more than anything else we could do in the long run. This FO and scouting and coaching staffs have excelled in this type of selection, (and are hitting on way more than they are missing on when taking players in the draft).

Now #2: Porter will have one serious attitude toward ANYTHING OR ANYBODY that happens to get between him and the opposing QB. That is precisely the type of attitude we have needed more of on this defense. Can you imagine, the effect Porter's tude will have on Dockett, Rhodes, and A-dub. Now try to expand that to what happens to CC, Alan Branch, Gabe Watson, and ANYBODY we put at SILB/WILB. This D has the potential to turn downright nasty, and with the youth movement, downright deep.

BONUS TIME: I think we may also get an additional benefit from taking Porter this year. Just by taking the stand that he has concerning his son and getting on in his career, and actually making a move to be close enough to have an effect-----we might be in for a special treat that he would probably not given much credence to earlier in his career. I see in him the mode to begin making the transition to (life after football). Get good money, get closer to home, (and just maybe a newfound concern and patience for the youngsters who will be competing to eventually replace him). What a BONUS it would be, if he somehow suddenly began to take youngsters under his wing and teach them what he already has found the hard way. That could happen, especially if he is really contemplating heavier things in life than he has before this time in his life. Just food for thought, but stay tuned-in because this might just catch on with him. If it does, he most certainly has learned many little things that make a difference, that he might be able to pass along.

FINALLY: I am betting that (getting our money's worth) out of Porter, will be of such little consequense, that it hardly weighs in on the Cards Richter Scale.
