Only time will tell and IMHO, Denny hasn't spent enough time with McCown to really asses his skills and weaknesses. Would I like to see a franchise QB picked up with our first draft pick? Yes. Would I like to see McCown blossom into a true top 10 QB? Absolutely. So, I am a waffler, with xtra syrup.

I agree also, NFL_FAN. 3 games that didn't really mean anything with no pressure to win, not that he didn't want to prove himself and win, just that there's a difference between going out and trying to show your stuff and going out and having to win.
I hope he does great, too, I really hope Green can do things with him. And before everybody comes back next year and says "I knew he'd be good" if he is successful, no one knows anything.....except that SECTION 11 wants Taylor or Jackson!:D

YES to JOSH!

I say, give Josh his shot. In his few appearances he's showed a very competitive nature and a strong arm. Good coaching can develop the rest.

There was certainly "pressure to win" on the Vikings in the last game; and they lost to the CARDS, to MCCown..

All I can see in my brain is him dropping back and firing a missile into the face mask of one of our O-line men. So no, I'm not comfortable with him.

No.

But not much less than I would be with a rookie back there.

And while the argument could be made that Roethlisberger and Manning - though new to the NFL - have such huge upsides, so does McCown. (The questionables on Josh has been his rawness and his ability to learn and to gain poise).

The only real issue is - By, say, Game 6, which QB would be the smartest and most poised for us? It's hard to say, but I'm not sure there would be all that much difference between the three.

And if there isn't, then why expend a top pick - that could better be spent elsewhere - on Roethlisberger or Manning?

I guess to answer the question Id have to consider the system he will be asked to play in. And my feeling is that Green will play conservatively enough using Shipp, Jones and a hopefully improved O line to provide McCown the stability he needs to continue learning. I dont believe we'lll see a wide open pasing atttack until either late in the season or next year after everyone gets their timing down as we will almost certainly have at least one new WR in the mix.
So yes Im comfortable if not exited to see Josh prosper under Greens tuteledge. And it will be interesting to watch the system evolve along with the both of them.

If you can convince Green then go ahead. But he believes in his system and his sytem is proven and it works.

I'll be happy with Williams or Fitz.

Just think they're better than McCown.

They could be drafting the future Ryan Leaf or Akili Smith too.

I am not a Cards fan so I know nothing about Josh. But what DG thinks does make a difference if DG is comfortable with him then I am.

The system and coaching make a big difference when it comes to QBs.
Put Peyton on another team running a different offense and he would not be as good. Remember Steve Young in TB vs SF.

DG has a record of developing QBs and scouting QBs so what he says does make a difference can't just ignore that. If he wasnt here then I would not feel as good about Josh given on my limited knowledge of him.

I knew you wouldn't be able to do as the thread asked...forget what DG says for a moment. :D

Go Josh, Go Cards!!!

Having been one of the biggest pro-McCown guys on the board, of course I am comfortable with him starting. I expected big things from him and I continue to expect big things from him.

He still has to grow into the position and I believe that he will get the proper coaching to do just that.

I'm comfortable with Josh. I actually prefer him to Roethlisberger. I think that if Manning falls to #3, however, that we have to take him.

No, I'm not particularly comfortable with Josh. Hopeful, but not convinced, that he's going to be a good starter.

It's going to be very interesting to see who, and if, we pursue a QB in free agency.

I am a big believer that a "great QB" can't do it on his own. Look at Harrington in Detroit. I loved the kid out of college but he has had more downs than ups in two years in the NFL.

I like Josh and felt that he improved in each game he started. Isn't that what you would want from a "rookie" QB. Was the inability to read defenses a rookie mistake (understandable), inexperienced WR's not getting open, no pass protection, or does he not have the brain to be a good QB. I will give him the benefit of the doubt that it was not all is fault.

On the other hand, how can you pass on a potential franchise QB? The problem is you won't know for three or four years if they are a great QB. Will "potential" get more bodies in the stands in our bandwagon town.

With so many other needs on the team, I am unsure what to do. I would be happy with Fitz, Williams, Eli, or Ben. It is important to build our defense through FA.

If I were choosing, I would take Ben. Your can say ,"Damn if you do, damn if you don't!" I just like the kid in what he has done in only four years at the QB position.

With two months before the draft, I could easily change my mind.

We need good development at our QB position, my stomach can't handle three or four more years of a Jake "I've got potential" Plummer clone.
